Where Polar Bears Live

A Home of Ice and Snow

   Would you like to live in ice or snow? Well, polar bears 

do. In fact, they live in lots of places. They live in Russia, 

Greenland, Canada and Alaska, which is in the United 

States. These places are full of ice and snow.

   However, their homes are getting warmer everyday. 

Please help the marine mammal's lives.

What do they look like?

   A polar bear has black skin and their fur 

is clear. A polar bear has big paws the size 

of a dinner plate. A polar bear is big.

   I use to think that polar bears had white fur but

polar bears have clear fur! The sun makes the fur white 

because of the reflection. Polar bears have black skin and it 

keeps them warm in the Arctic and other cold places in

 Canada, U.S.A and Churchill.

   They have sharp claws and use them to catch their food,

which is seals and more. Polar bears have four paws that

they use to swim. They swim to get to land, find food and 

to get home. Polar bears use their paws to walk on dirt,

grass and ice. They walk on ice to find seals and more

food.

Activities

  Did you know that polar bears love sparing, 

trying to get seals and training their cubs so they 

can fight?

  They hunt for seals on Hudson Bay so they 

can eat seal blubber to survive against their 

enemies. They have to eat because if they 

don't, they won't have cubs. That is sad.

Polar Bear Lives

   Polar bear lives are extremely difficult! Everyday, polar bears struggle 

for food, mates and blubber. Throughout the day, they wait patiently by a 

ringed seal breathing hole for seconds, minutes and hours. Just lying, 

rolling and trying to entertain themselves. Finally, a ringed seal pokes his 

head up. SWAP! The bear crashes it's paw into the ringed seal. WOW!

   The polar bear then walks away into a park called, Wapusk National 

Park of Canada. The bear comes across a den and mates. The cubs will 

be born in 3 months.

   Mom polar bears are having less cubs because moms aren't getting 

enough food. The ice is also melting and the mom is swimming farther 

distances. The babies can't catch up and they will drown.

   We desperately need to think about how to make polar bear lives easier.

   Polar bears don't do much throughout the day.   All 

they really only do is spar, hunt, walk around and 

sleep. These are the main things polar bears do 

during their day and night.

   If a polar bear was sleeping, I wouldn't want to pet 

it. Would you?

What Polar 

Bears Eat

Snatch! Yum!

   Polar bears love ringed seals. They are their favorite type 

of seal as seals give the polar bear blubber that helps polar 

bears stay alive. After eating a yummy seal, the polar bear 

doesn't have to eat until another week. Polar bears wait and 

wait at the seals breathing hole. Suddenly, a seal pokes it's 

head up for a breath. SNATCH! The seal is gone and the polar 

bear is full of it's supper. There's only enough bites left for the 

Arctic fox. Now the polar bear has to wait again to get it's 

paws on another seal.

What Polar Bears Eat

   Do you know what polar bears eat? Polar bears 

eat seals and fish. They eat seals because the seals 

give them blubber. They need blubber to stay alive. 

If they have no blubber, they might die. They wait 

patiently at a breathing hole for the seal to come 

up.

dying.

   Food

   Did you know that polar bears hunt seals, walruses, whales 

and fish! Polar bears need blubber to make them fat. The 

polar bear's paw is the size of a dinner plate. Scientists 

dropped dead pigs down onto Hudson Bay because polar 

bears were starving. It helped them 

a little bit as some polar bears ate the pigs. The polar bear 

needs lots of food. If they don't get enough food, they will 

starve.

   Polar bears catch seals by waiting at breathing 

holes.Then when a seal pops up, they will jump on 

it. They will also go up behind it and attack it to eat.

 If you ever saw a polar bear hunt, then it would be 

one of the most incredible things you have ever 

seen!

What Polar Bears Hunt

   Did you know a polar bears favorite food is the ringed seal? When polar bears 

are hunting, they have to be very patient because seals have more than one 

breathing hole.

Polar bears hunt seals because of their blubber. They need blubber to survive. 

Some polar bears will even hunt walruses. Walruses are also sea creatures. 

Some polar bears are known to eat killer whales.

   Scientists tried to HELP polar bears by raising pigs because the pigs had blubber! 

They gave the bears dead pigs. But not many polar bears cared for those piggies. 

Some polar bears ate them.

   Polar bears are hunted by the Inuit people but the Inuit use everything from the 

polar bear. Inuit are people that live up north and depend on the polar bear to live 

because they need the food and fur. The Inuit pray when they kill a polar bear.

   Polar bears aren't as good at hunting when they are under water. 

Polar bears swim up to 35 km per hour and can hold their breath for over 

four minutes long.

   In order for polar bears to hunt seals, people need to stop 

global warming. Melting ice will cause less polar bears, less seals 

and less fish.  

So please stop littering because it would HELP! Stop making the ice 

melt so polar bears can hunt!

Hunting

   Did you know that a polar bears favorite food is the seal? But there 

absolute favorite seal is the ringed seal. Polar bears need seals for their 

blubber.

   Polar bears sometimes hunt walruses. Walruses can hurt a polar bear 

with their tusks. In the summertime in Churchill, polar bears hunt fish.

    Did you know that polar bears are the largest land carnivore?

Polar bears aren't getting enough seals because of people causing the 

Earth to warm up. The ice is melting faster and faster every year. We 

need to stop causing global warming.

Polar bear cubs

   Awww! If you could imagine a little cute cub right in your 

face, what would you do? Polar bear cubs are smaller than a 

human baby. They weigh about 1 pound when they are 

born. A baby cub will stay with their mom for 2 years. 

Sometimes a mother will have 1 or 2 babies. If a mother 

has 2 babies, they are called twins. Babies are born blind 

when they are born. But unfortunately, sometimes the baby 

will pass away because their mom can't find food to feed 

her babies.

    If you could have a chance to see a baby polar bear, I 

would take the chance.

A Home

   Do you know where polar bears live? Well if you don't know, I'll tell 

you. They live in a side of a hill as they don't mind the snow.

   Close to six months after the mother gives birth, she pokes her head 

out of the den to make sure there are no other polar bears around or 

anything that could hurt her babies. The mom goes back inside to feed 

her babies.

   Polar bears usually have two babies but since global warming, they 

only have one because the mother doesn't have as much food. 

Sometimes the baby does not live because the mother doesn't have 

enough food. Global warming can effect polar bears lives. Please help! 

They need us.

Polar Bears Can't Hunt Food!

    Do you know why polar bears can't hunt food? Global Warming! 

Global warming is causing the ice to melt in the Arctic. 

Without the ice, polar bears can't find food. 

   A polar bears favorite food is a ringed seal. Polar bears 

love seals because of their blubber. They will also eat fish, 

sometimes killer whales and if they can't find any food then 

they will eat garbage. They are not supposed to do that so 

we need to help polar bears.

Global Warming

   Did you know that the Earth is getting hotter? Stop 

using so much electricity. Since the ice is melting, 

polar bears are being forced to eat our garbage and 

that's bad because polar bears don't get enough 

seals. Polar bears need seals in order to stay warm for 

the winter!

   Stop building factories! It pollutes the air and 

poisons the polar bears!

   Polar bears are dying! Global warming is causing polar bears to die. 

People are the ones causing it. They are doing it by keeping their lights 

on, keeping their cars on at drive-thru restaurants and stores, etc.

   Global warming is when the Earth heats up for certain reasons and 

this is what is killing polar bears. Did you know that it's hard to find 

food for polar bears? Well, it is because of global warming. We need to 

save POLAR BEARS! 

   We can help them by not cutting down trees, not keeping our lights 

on when we are not using them and try not to go in a drive-thru.

Global Warming

   Oh no! Did you know that you are causing global warming? It's bad 

for you to smoke as you're polluting the world. Polar bears are dying 

because of global warming. You know it's never too late to help polar 

bears.

   You can help stop global warming by not smoking as it pollutes the 

air, pick up garbage everywhere, recycle, don't waste paper and recycle 

batteries. No matter what it is, you need to do it. Everything matters, 

including polar bears.

   When the sea ice melts, the ocean goes higher and this means less 

polar bears and seals. So please help polar bears by not causing global 

warming. No matter how big or small it is, you have to make a 

difference. Polar bears are in danger so help polar bears. I can't do it 

alone so help me save the beautiful polar bear NOW!

Global Warming

   Global warming is causing polar bears to not get food. Global 

warming is a bad thing for polar bears. It means that where 

polar bears live, the air is getting hotter. This is 

making the ice melt. When polar bears don't get their food, 

they die.   The mother polar bear tries to find food to get the 

blubber but they can't find it as the ice is melting. People are 

making global warming happen. So STOP what you're doing and

Enemies

   Did you know you can help polar bears? To help polar bears, you 

need to car pool. 

   A polar bear's enemies are other polar bears and killer whales. A 

killer whale is an enemy because if a polar bear is on the ice, a killer 

whale would tip the iceberg and get the polar bear.

   An Arctic fox is a friend to the polar bear. If a bear catches the 

seal, the polar bear would eat the blubber and the Arctic fox will eat 

the leftovers.

   Global warming is melting the ice so please help in raising money 

for the polar bears.

endangered because of their enemies. Polar bears try to go 

away but their enemies get them. 

   Do you know that a grizzly bear could be an enemy if

cars and turn off Minecraft when you are not using 

it. We can use electric powered cars. They use 

electricity and no gas. Turn off your lights and use 

natural light. You can play with Pokemon toys 

instead of playing on the computer.

   We can help polar bears by going on a bus and car 

pooling. That helps polar bears because it stops global 

warming. The ice is melting so they can not eat seals

 and instead, eat garbage. You can help by not 

smoking, walk or ride bikes, use solar power, get

Polar Bears Drown

   Polar bears can swim and drown if there is nothing 

to rest on. They can swim more than an hour and 

they can swim far too.   If there is no iceberg to rest 

on, the polar bear can drown or it keeps swimming a 

little bit more but then it will drown.

No Where to Go

   It's too hot! Guess what? Did you know that polar bears are 

drowning? It's because of global warming. Let me tell you 

how it works.

   First, it starts with people doing bad things to the Earth, 

such as going through the drive-thru. Then, it gets too hot! 

The ice is melting and polar bears are having trouble finding 

more icebergs. Soon there will be no more icebergs left and

 they will get exhausted and soon drown.

   This is very sad. You need to stop and think before you do 

something bad. Think if it's going to hurt polar bears or other 

animals. No matter how small or big it is, we have to make a 

difference!

Drowning

   Did you know that polar bears are drowning? Do you know 

why? It's because of global warming. Global warming is 

melting the Arctic and that's causing the ice to melt. So say, 

I'm a polar bear and I'm swimming. I'll stop at an iceberg to 

take a break. Then I'll swim again but will need another 

break. I'll find another iceberg but I can't find one! So then I 

drown.

know what's happening to polar bear cubs? The things 

that are happening is that they are drowning and 

starving.

  How the cubs are drowning is that they are trying to 

swim because of global warming. So they are trying to

because their mother is not getting enough food.

Drowning

   Polar bear cubs drown because they can not swim that 

far. Cubs drown because they don't have power to swim 

really far. A polar bear mom just watches her cub drown. 

Then, she keeps on swimming so she doesn't drown too. 

The cubs can't breathe when they are under water. 

   Drowning is bad for polar bears. Please help polar bears 

so they don't drown!

Oil Spills

   Did you know that all Arctic animals can die 

from oil spills? Polar bears lose their water 

proof fur from oil spills. If a bird gets oil on it's 

feathers, they can't fly anymore. 

   Some people get their oil from under the 

ocean. Other people help animals by cleaning 

them with special soap.

   Research on polar bears is very expensive to do.   You will 

need lots of money to research to know what the bears are 

doing and how many cubs they have.   It costs a fortune to get 

one of those ear tags to put on a bear to track it.

   You could bring money to school, have a lemonade stand or 

have a bake sale. You could donate the money to the World 

Wildlife Fund or Polar Bears International. They will give 

the money to scientists to research on polar bears. If polar 

bears were extinct, how would you feel? Well, I would feel sad.

Things That Everyone Can Do

   Oh my gosh! We HAVE to make a change. Polar bears are 

dying and do you know why? People are doing BAD things to 

polar bears, like smoking, wasting gas, cutting down trees and 

not shutting off the lights when they are done in a room. We 

have to stop that! So we have to do better things like 

carpooling, planting trees, not smoking and turning off the 

lights when you leave a room.

  We have to make a change. Imagine a world without polar 

bears. Then we would lose another animal in the world.

Arctic Fox - A fox that follows polar bears for food. They are white in the winter and

Blubber - Fat that is on seals and walruses. Polar bears eat this to survive.

Breathing Hole - A hole in the ice where seals come up to get air.

Car Pool - People driving together in one car instead of using many cars.

Carnivore - An animal that eats meat.

Churchill - A town in northern Manitoba that is known as the "Polar Bear Capital

                of the World". It's beside Hudson Bay.

Cub- A baby bear.

Den - A warm hole dug in the snow that a mother bear goes into to have her cubs.

Electricity - Energy that powers things, such as lights, a t.v. and phones.

Enemy - Animals that hunt other animals to eat. People who hurt animals.

Extinct - The animal is gone, there is no more of them in the world.

Global Warming - Temperature around the Earth warming up.

Grizzly Bear - A large brown bear that lives in Canada and the U.S.A. It's smaller

                     than a polar bear.

Hudson Bay - A bay of water that is connected to Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.

                    It joins with the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic. 

Iceberg - A   large floating piece of ice.

Inuit - A group of people who live in the Arctic that rely on the land to survive.

Killer Whale - A black and white whale that lives with family members, called

                     a pod. They eat fish, seals, other whales and polar bears.

Minecraft - A video game where you build houses or anything you want.

Oil Spills - Oil that spills into the ocean from ships or oil refineries.

Pass Away - Something that has died.

Patient - To wait a long time. Polar bears wait long for seals.

Pokemon - A television show where imaginary creatures, that humans train, 

                fight each other for sport. It's also a card game and toys.

Polar Bears International - The world's leading polar bear conservation organization.

Pollutes - To make land, ocean, lakes, rivers and the air dirty.

Reflection - Light shinning on an object and is bounced back. Light shines on polar

                 bear fur and it looks white.

Research - To learn about something.

Ringed Sea; - A polar bears favorite seal. They live in the Arctic.

Scientists - People who study things, such as studying animals.

Seal - An animal that lives on land and water. They are full of blubber that 

         bears need.

Solar Power - Electricity that comes from the Sun.

Sparing - Polar bears that are practicing fighting.

Starve - Not having enough food to eat.

Struggle - Very hard to live.

Walruses - A large animal that has long tusks and a lot of blubber. They live in 

                land and water in the Arctic.

Wapusk National Park - A park in Northern Manitoba that has a lot of dens.
