Na wsi pod Krakowem mieszkał chłopiec. Był pastuszkiem i rzeźbił postaci i przedmioty w drewnie.

A boy lived in a village near Krakow. He was a shepherd boy and he carved figures and objects in wood. 

Zajęty rzeźbieniem nie potrafił pilnować pasących się krów. 

Busy carving, he could not keep an eye on the grazing cows. 

Bojąc się ojca, wyruszył w świat.

 Fearing his father, he set off into the world.

Dotarł do Krakowa i został uczniem mistrza Wita Stwosza, który pracował 

na ołtarzem w Kościele Mariackim.

He came to Krakow and became 

a student of Master Wit Stwosz, 

who worked at the altar in St. Mary's Church.

Chłopiec miał talent i wkrótce sam rzeźbił figury ołtarza.

The boy had talent, and soon he was carving the altar figures himself.

Gdy stworzył postać króla Kazimierza Jagiellończyk, kościół odwiedził sam król.

When he created the figure of King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk, the king himself visited the church.

Zachwycony król podarował mu żółte ciżemki – buty, które nosili wtedy mieszczanie.

The delighted king gave him yellow boots - shoes that the townspeople were wearing at that time

(sixteenth-century foot-wear).

Podarowane ciżemki chłopiec założył na uroczystość odsłonięcia ołtarza.

The donated shoes were put on by the boy for the ceremony of unveiling the altar.

W ostatniej chwili mistrz Wit Stwosz zauważył, że jednej z figur brakuje elementu. Poprosił chłopca, by ten wspiął się wysoko na ołtarz i dokonał poprawek.

At the last moment, the master Wit Stoss noticed that one of the figures was missing an element. He asked the boy to climb high up the altar and make corrections.

Chłopiec wykonał polecenie, ale podczas pracy but zsunął mu się ze stopy i wpadł za ołtarz.

The boy obeyed, but while he was working, the shoe slipped off his foot and fell behind the altar.

Znaleziono go kilkaset lat później, 

gdy odnawiano ołtarz.

It was found several hundred years later, while the altar was being renovated.

I wtedy powstała opowieść o uzdolnionym chłopcu i jego żółtej ciżemce.  

And then a story was written about 

a gifted boy and his yellow boot.
