My dear friends, I’m sure that the people in town will share their food with us if we tell them how much we have walked. 

I feel so good now that we are here but I’m so hungry that I feel like I have a hole in my stomach! 

Many years ago there were three travellers who arrived to a small village. Their names were Ivan, Benny and Miolka. They were tired and hungry because they had travelled for many, many days. They were happy when they saw the village and they only thought about eating and resting from their long walk. 

Ivan knocked at the door.

We are three travellers. We are on our way home. Would you like to share your food with us, kind woman?  

Who is it?

Food? No, I can’t. I have nothing to share with you! 

Thank you!

Ivan knocked at another door.  

Good afternoon

What do you want?

I have nothing to give you.  

We would like something to eat. We are travellers on our way home. We have walked a long distance and we are very hungry. 

Ivan knocked at another the door but he received the same answer. Nobody opened the door to give them some food.  

Let’s give them a lesson. We will teach them how to cook a stone soup! 

They don’t like to share with others! 

People are so selfish!

That'a a good idea!

Some villagers were looking through the windows waiting for them to leave the village.  

What are they waiting for? They should leave! 

We don’t want strangers in our town!  

Meanwhile the three strangers put a fire in the middle of the street. Then they took a big iron pot they found somewhere.  

Let’s go to the river to take some water

Yes, and don’t forget to bring some stones for the soup… but choose the best… round and tasty!

Later Benny and Miolka came back with the stones and put them inside the pot.  

This soup will taste good!   

The people from town who were watching them all time came out from their houses and went near the fire.

What are you doing? 

Oh, we are doing a stone soup.

Stone soup? I’ve never heard of that kind of soup.  

You have never tasted stone soup? Ah then join us to have dinner so you can taste it. Friends! Today we have a special guest for dinner. We should put more stones to the soup.  

Very well. Excuse me, kind man, do you have a spoon? We need it to make the soup.  

Yes, yes. Let me go and get it.  

You are very generous. 

Then a woman went near to see what was happening.

We are making a stone soup.  

And did you take the stones from our river?   

Yes we did. And this soup smells good!   

I don’t smell anything but to tell the truth I am very hungry. 

What are you doing?

The man with the spoon came back and also brought his plate. Benny tasted the soup and said... 

Mmmmm, it’s so delicious! It only needs and onion. 

I have an onion at home, let me go and get it.  

Very good! The soup will taste better. And also bring your plate and have dinner with us. 

The woman left running and soon came back with some onions. After a while Benny tasted the soup…

Mmmmm, it’s so delicious! It think we also need some carrots.  

Another man that was also in the crowd watching said…

I will bring some carrots  

Then the man came with the carrots. Benny put the carrots in the pot and tasted it again.

Mmmmm, this soup is getting better. Now it’s time to put some potatoes.   

Another woman that was in the crowd watching said...

I have some potatoes! I’ll be back in a minute!   

When the woman came back Benny put the potatoes inside the pot.

No! that’s too many potatoes, the soup will not taste good! 

We can still fix it. How about if we add some meat?

Another man that was in the crowd said..

I have some meat at home! I will go and get it.   

Then the man brought the meat and Ivan put it inside the pot. While the soup was cooking some people from the village asked the three travellers if everybody could cook the stone soup,  

Sure! It only needs some water, stones and a little bit of hunger,  

After a while the soup started to smell really delicious 

The stones in your village are so delicious! This soup will taste really good! Bring your plate so we can all share this soup.

And everybody in the village enjoyed a wonderful dinner while Ivan, Benny and Miolka talked about their journey and about the places they had visited
