Centuries ago, during the reign of King Krak, the founder of the Krakow city, a dragon settled in a large cave on the slope of the Wawel city.

The king decided to give his daughter's hand to whoever slayed the fierce dragon. 

Do Krakowa coraz tłumniej zaczęli przyjeżdżać rycerze, żadnemu jednak nie udało się smoka pokonać.

Knights started to come to Krakow more and more, but none of them managed to defeat the dragon.

Wtedy na dworze królewskim pojawił się pewien młody szewczyk Skuba, który obiecał, ze poradzi sobie z groźną bestią. Cały orszak otaczających króla rycerzy parsknął śmiechem traktując słowa szewczyka jako dobry żart.

Then a young shoemaker Skuba appeared at the royal court and promised that he would deal with the dangerous beast. The entire retinue of the knights surrounding the king laughed, treating the shoemaker's words as a good joke.

Szewczyk jednak nie zniechęcił się łatwo. Dnia następnego zdobył skórę barana, którą napchał siarką i wystawił ją przed smoczą jamą. 

However, Skuba did not get discouraged easily. The next day, he obtained a sheepskin, stuffed it with sulfur, and displayed it in front of the dragon's den.

The dragon, attracted by the sight of a tasty snack, quickly grabbed the ram and ate it.

Wtedy siarka zaczęła parzyć jego brzuch, smok zionął prawdziwym ogniem. Chcąc uśmierzyć palący ból smok zaczął pić wodę z Wisły. Pił, pił i robił się coraz większy i większy aż w końcu pękł.

Then the sulfur began to burn his belly, the dragon breathed real fire. Wanting to ease the burning pain, the dragon began to drink water from the Vistula River. He drank and drank and grew bigger and bigger until it burst.
