The beaver(castor fiber) was once widespread in Greece and in Portugal,as it can be proven by fossil records as well as toponymy(names of places ex.the town of Kastoria in Greece).

They became extinct because people hunt them for their furs,meat and "castoreum" used in perfumes,food and medicine.

Now a project of reintroduction is being held in both countries because beavers create thriving ecosystems and make habitat for other wildlife.Also they affect microclimate keeping humidity in the environment.
