Arthur Baker is a detective at New Island Police Department. Today, he was given the most important job in the department's history. It was code-named T.M.M.D, or The Case of The Missing Magenta Diamond.
It all started on August 2, 1983, when the New Islands Police Department's chief reported a break-in. The robber had stolen the Magenta Diamond. The most valued artifact in the world. It was kept at The New Island Museum of History. Although it was the most protected artifact in the world, it mysteriously vanished without a trace.
Now, after years of trying to find it, the new chief of the department has assigned a young though particularly exceptional detective, Arthur Baker, to the job. "Today is the day," Arthur said as he put on his detective uniform. "The case that I have wanted to get for my whole life. Ever since I'd heard about it on T.V. when I was three. Finally, my dream is coming true, 20 years later.
When Arthur got to the police station, everyone was greeting him and telling him good luck. They all cheered as he left the building and set for the road. The exhibit at the museum was closed just like it had been for the past 20 years. When he walked inside with his new assistant, all he saw was an empty glass box on a stone pedestal that was placed in the middle of the room.
"Where do we start?" Arthur's assistant, Sammy, asked.
"I am going to start to look for clues in here, you go check in the other room over there," Arthur responded. After 20 minutes of searching, Arthur heard a deep voice from his walkie-talkie.
It said, "It's futile. Stop looking for me, you will never be able to find me and my beautiful diamond." The voice sounded like it was coming from the room that Sammy was in! Arthur quickly ran into the room and found Sammy laying on the floor unconscious.
Suddenly Sammy woke up. "What happened?", Arthur asked.
"I don't remember", Sammy responded.
"Ok," said Arthur. "You go stay in the museum's lounge and rest, while I find clues." Arthur knew there was something suspicious about this case, but he could not quite put his finger on what.
Later that day, at the department, Arthur remembered that to use one of the department's walkie-talkies, you need a special key. Also, only department members know that you need a key. Arthur gasped, "THAT MEANS THERE IS A MOLE IN THE DEPARTMENT!"
"Ha, Ha, Ha you finally figured me out," the voice in the Walkie-Talkie said." It took your colleagues long enough. I was starting to get bored. I like you, Arthur, How about we play a game?
"The game is that you have to try and figure out who I am. However -- this is the fun part -- every single time you guess wrong, I steal something from the history museum. Every single time, the artifact gets more valuable. Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you. Just remember I am always watching.
That night, Arthur could barely sleep. He was too worried about who to interrogate, he knew that if he messed up, there would be major repercussions. What would he do? The next morning, he decided to interrogate officer Jenga. Officer Jenga was a tall and slender man that had hair that looked like he got tased one thousand times. He always seemed like he was crazy. However, Arthur knew that he was not bad. He had helped the department with so many important cases.
So, Arthur decided to have his interrogation in a van. While he was asking Jenga some questions, he was also driving to the museum. After he was done interrogating Jenga, Arthur said on his radio that he was innocent. A minute later, he heard the voice on the walkie-talkie scream "Wrong!" However, Arthur was already in the building. He walked around the building and then saw a man in a mask taking a stone that came from the Nile river.
Arthur quickly ran over, but the robber saw him and shoved the stone in his pocket. Then he took off. He was very quick on his feet and seemed to know the museum like the back of his hand. Arthur screamed "Stop!", but the robber seemed to ignore him. By himself he was outmatched, so he decided to call in reinforcements.
However, the chief did not respond. So, he had to call the chief's assistant instead. The reinforcements were on their way, so the only thing Arthur could do was keep on chasing the criminal. However, after a little bit of running, the criminal saw an exit. To Arthur's luck, when he opened the door, he saw a group of officers blocking the doorway. The reinforcements had arrived just on time! The criminal tried turning around but Arthur was standing behind him. After the officers were done tying him up. Arthur said, "Now let's see who you are." Arthur pulled off the mask, and it was...
The Police Chief?!
All of the officers stuttered back except for Arthur. He just stood there with a grin. "I am surprised you are not shocked," The criminal said in a raspy voice.
"Why would I be?" Arthur cunningly declared. "You see, I knew it was you ever since the beginning. Well, ever since I first heard you on my walkie-talkie at the museum. I knew that only someone with a key could use one of the department's walkie-talkies. At first, I thought it was my assistant, but then that night when you talked to me, you said that you were always watching.
"This means that you had to know everything that was taking place in the department. However, you were too busy setting up your robbery at the museum that you weren't there to advise my interrogation. So, you had no idea that I was having my interrogation take place in the van that is parked in front of the museum. It also makes sense that you knew everything in the museum like the back of your hand because as the chief, you have a detailed map telling you all of the entry points, exit points, and the location of all of the rooms and artifacts at the museum. Another thing that made it easy for you to steal everything is that you have access to all of the museum's security networks because you were chief.
"It's simple really, and I don't know how it took the department so long to find out you were behind this."
"Bravo!" Screamed the criminal in a crazed voice. "Bravo to you all! You guys outdid yourselves this time. Unfortunately for you, our game is not quite over. I still have your precious Magenta Diamond hidden in every special place. So let's keep on playing, shall we? I wonder where it could be." Right before the criminal got driven away, he screamed to Arthur, "Don't get too comfortable, remember, that I am still always watching." Then he cackled away into the distance.
Arthur had trouble sleeping that night. All he could think about was what the criminal had said.
"A very special place," Arthur thought. What did that mean? And what did he mean about how he was still always watching? Could there be another mole in the department? He had so many questions that he could not answer. The only thing he could do was try and find clues.
The next morning, to his surprise, the mayor of New Island was waiting at the department. Arthur went to the mayor to ask what was going on.
However, all the mayor said was, "Congratulations." After that, the mayor put his mic to his mouth and said, "For his valor, I declare Arthur Baker the new head, of the New Island Police Department. Arthur was in shock, but he knew that he could not celebrate for too long and that his job would only get harder from here. For he knew, that he needed to find the missing Magenta Diamond.
