E-Twinning 2023

He looked at the paper in front of him.
A long list filled with names of young men who wanted to fight.
In a war that never seemed to find an end.
No successfull victory.
Neither an outlook of a stable future with peace on both sides.
No, that wasn't an option.
Only a wishfull outcome.

He looked at the enlisting again.
As he read through the names, not even processing them, he could hear the screams.
Once filled with hope, now full of fear.
Little children holding onto their last belongings, crying.
Glass shattering.

Whole towns in ruins.
Once filled with life, now empty and dead.
Somewhere he could hear mothers, wifes, sisters and lovers breaking down.
Holding loved ones for the last time and watching them, crying on the floor, leaving through the door.
Maybe for the last time.
He thought about her.
Being one of the lovers breaking down.
Her pretty face puffy and red.
The tears rolling down her cheeks.

But going to war would bring him honor.
A honored name she could take as her own.
The brave man she would marry...
A father who would finally accept the engagement...

He read the names again.

What if he died?
But what if he succeded?
He looked at the paper again.

Then at the pencil right next to it.
