In the highest tree an egg was beginning to
hatch.

The egg hatched a little bird called Joe, Joe the crow.

Joe wanted to fly like all the other birds. He tried so
hard but it didn’t work.

Joe asked the parrot.

“Mr Parrot how do you fly so well?”
“It just happened when I was born,” said the parrot in a
posh voice.
That wasn’t all that helpful.

So Joe asked the Kakapo

“How do you fly so well?”
“I am a bird who can fly from birth,” said the Kakapo in
a mischievous voice.

Joe felt sad. He began to cry.

“Why are you crying?” asked a quiet voice.

“I can’t fly,” said Joe.
“Not all birds can fly, I can’t either, nor can my cousin
Pukeko or Charlie the chicken,” said Kiwi.
Joe felt much better.

“Can we play together?” asked the Kiwi.
“Sure,” replied Joe.

They played hide and seek, tag and soccer with a
bommyknocker.

And in the final game they played running races. Joe
flapped his wings and took off.

Joe looked back at the kiwi and called excitedly “See you
soon old friend.”
