A long time ago,in a big castle in Wawel there lived a 12-year-old princess whose name was Gabija. She loved to explore and was always curious about the world.
One day she heard the servants whispering about a terrible dragon that lived in a cave under the castle.
The Princess Gabija and
cursed Dragon

Everyone said that the dragon was scary and mean, but princess Gabija thought that it could be something more behind the story.

Late afternoon, while her father, King, was busy in the throne room, Gabija sneaked down into the dark tunnels beneath the castle.
She walked carefully, holding a lantern, until she came to a huge stone door.
On the other side there was a dragon!

The dragon was enormous, with shiny golden scales and big sad eyes

The dragon did not roar or breathe fire. He just asked princess Gabija softly:

Why are you here, little girl?

I heard about you. Everyone says, you are mean and scary, but I don't think that's true.
The dragon explained:
Long long ago I protected this kingdom. But one of the kings trapped me here because he was afraid of my power. Now I am stuck and lonely. All I can do is to roar and breathe fire from time to time to scare people and to save my health.

Princess Gabija felt sorry for the dragon.

You are a brave little princess! Maybe, you can show the world that not all dragons are bad.
I will help you! I will find a way to help you and make things better!
From that day princess Gabija visited dragon every day. She brought him food and told stories.
One day she came with a plan to help him. But she had to be very careful, because if her father King found out, he would be very angry.

One day the dragon told the princess his story:

You know,a curse was placed on me, because long long ago a greedy king wanted to keep my treasure for himself , but it was for people.
The curse can be broken by someone who is not afraid of the dragon and who could show him kindness.

The dragon was very sad, but he continued his story...
The curse can only be lifted if a human brings me something precious - not for my treasure, but to show that he/she trusts me. Only then the magic and the curse will be gone.

Gabija thought and thought. She didn't have gold or silver, but she remembered her locket she always wore. It contained a picture of her mother who had passed away when she was born. The locket was the most precious thing she owned.

What can I do?????

I will give this locket to you. Will it work?

But it is very precious to you! Are you sure?
As soon as the dragon accepted the locket, the cave began to glow with golden light. The curse faded and the dragon grew even brighter and more magnificent !

Thank you! You did it, princess Gabija! You have freed me! Your kindness broke the curse!

You are welcome!
The Wawel Dragon stayed near the castle, but no longer as a feared creature. He helped to protect the kingdom.
He became princesses' friend and a symbol of courage for the people.
The princess Gabija became known as princess who made a new friend by trusting her heart.
After many years the Wawel Dragon disappeared, becoming a legend passed down through generations.
Princess Gabija ensured that the true story was remembered, teaching the people of importance of kindness and understanding.
Later, the people of Wawel erected a monument to the dragon which you can see whenever you visit the place.
