The Three Princes

Comenius Regio
Once upon a time there was an old King who called
his three sons and told them:

• My good children, I am too old to rule our
country. I love you equally so in order to decide
which of you will be my heir you will go under a
simple test. Each of you will go out of the palace,
search and bring me the fairest thing. Whoever
chooses the greatest good, he will become the next
King.

The sons kissed their father and began their
quest…

The oldest son returned back first,
bringing along a stone, azure like the sky
and bright like the sun!
The King, impressed, said:
• Well done my son! Your present is
really lovely!

The middle
son brought
an airy veil
weaved by
the forest
fairies,
sewed with
golden
thread by the
‘Beauty’.

• Congratulations my son! You brought me
one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen!!!
, stressed the King.

Late at night the youngest son
reached the palace, tired and filthy.
Sad as he was, he apologized to his
father:

• Father, I am sorry… I brought
you nothing… When I left the palace, I
saw an old woman in the middle of the
fields who was digging the land and
trying to take off her potatoes from
the ground. I stopped to help her, so I
grabbed the pickaxe. I dug the land, I
collected the potatoes and then I
carried them to the woman’s house but
unfortunately the night had already
come and there was no more time left
to fulfill your will.

The King, really touched from his son’s action, took
his tired hands and kissed them.

• Thank you my son! You brought me the best
gift! The good of hard work, love and offering. You are
the next King of our kingdom!

The youngest son ruled with love and justice for
many many years, having on his side his brothers.

And they lived happily ever after!!
