The Princess and
Once upon a time there was an old fisherman who lived
with his son. Every day he went fishing and then he sold
the fish in order to earn a living. One day, he caught a
goldfish and brought it home. When his son saw it he
said:
• Father, I will sell the goldfish and earn much
money!
The fisherman did not agree but his son’s persistence
pursued him. So the young man took the goldfish
outside the palace to sell it.
• Goldfish for saleeeeeeeeee!!! I have got a
goldfish for saleeeeeee!!!!

The Princess and her companions heard him and invited the
young man in the palace’s kitchen. They loved the goldfish
and wanted to buy it.
• Tell us, young man, how much does your goldfish
worth??
• I do not want money, he replied.
• Then we can give you food, clothes or whatever you
ask for.
• I just want the Princess to show me the mark on her
leg.
• And how do you know about my marks? , asked the
Princess.
Your Highness, my grandmother was a midwife and she
helped your mother in your birth.

When I was a young boy she kept telling what a beautiful
baby you were and about your tiny marks.
The young woman, shy enough, raised her skirt and showed
him the small mark on her ankle. Then the young man gave her
the goldfish and took his way back. He torn his clothes and
when he saw his father he told him:
• I am sorry father… Somebody attacked me and took
the goldfish away.
The father, though sorrowful, tried to give comfort to his
son:
• It does not matter… Tomorrow I will bring fish so we
can eat.
The next day, the fisherman caught a bigger goldfish and his
son asked him again to give it to him so he could sell it.

• But my son, I am afraid that they will attack you again
and then we will have no bread to eat…
• No father! This time I will make it! You will see!
The old man had no option but leave his child as he wished. The
poor man went again outside the palace to sell the goldfish.
• I have got a goldfish for saleeeeeeeeee! Anybody???
The Princess and her companions brought him once again into the
kitchen. They got really enthusiast with the goldfish and asked
to buy it.
• What do you want to give you? , they asked.
• I want nothing more than the Princess show me her
second mark!
The Princess denied but the young man insisted that he would
not give the fish even in exchange for all the goods of the world.

Then she raised her skirt and revealed him a small mark on her
knee. The young man gave her the fish and told his father the
same lie. The hopeless father told him:
• This cannot go on! I catch the best fish and you lose
them!
The next day the fisherman caught the biggest and finest
goldfish he had ever seen! The son insisted on selling it, the
father denied but soon after he gave in to his son’s pressure.
The young man stood once again outside the palace and
yielded:
• I have got a goldfish and is the most beautiful
goldfish eveeeeeeeeeeer!!!
The Princess with her companions invited him for the third
time in the kitchen and when they saw the goldfish they
exclaimed!

• We give you a fortune for this goldfish! , said the girls.
• But I do not want your money. The only thing I desire is
to see the Princess’ third mark!
Even though her companions pleased her, this time the young
woman was determined not to show him her mark. But the sliest
of all told her:
• Your Highness, you have already shown your other two
marks to this wreck. Besides, who will believe him If he tries to
harm your reputation?
‘She is right’, the Princess thought and she raised her skirt until
the third mark on her thigh was revealed. The poor man returned
to his father pretending that he had been again attacked and
stolen. At that time the King had claimed that whoever knew the
marks on the Princess’ body, he would be her husband.

!
The Lords rushed for the Princess hand as soon as they heard
this. The poor man stood among them and when her companions
saw him, were really scared.
• Oh God, here is this wrecked man who really knows the
marks! Hurry, let’s lock him into the room, give him as much
money as he asks and tell him to leave immediately!
So is as it happened and the young man went to his father full of
money!
• Here are enough money for the first fish father! Take
it!
In the meanwhile none of the Lords could guess the Princess’
marks so the man went again in the palace. The girls recognized
him again and gave him many golden coins in order to leave. He
went to the area’s best tailor and made a glamorous costume.

He bought a very pretty horse and he gave his father the rest
of the money telling him:
• Father take these money for the second fish!
Since nobody had managed to take the Princess’ hand, he
decided to go over the palace, dressed in his fine costume! His
luxurious clothing prevented the girls from recognizing him. At
his turn he said loud and clearly the exact place of the girls
marks. So, the fisherman’s son and the Princess got married and
lived happily ever after!
