Hubo un tiempo en el que aún no se habían decidido los nombres para cada continente. En el caso de Europa, se eligió ese nombre por un motivo bien curioso que nos cuentan desde la mitología griega.

There was a time when the names of the continents still had not been decided. In the case of Europe, they chose this name for a curious reason, taken from Greek mythology.

Una vez el dios Zeus estaba observando el mundo desde su casa del Olimpo y se fijó en una princesa fenicia llamada Europa que estaba bañándose en la playa junto a sus amigas.

At one time the God Zeus was observing the world from his house on Mount Olympus, when he saw a Phoenician princess called Europa bathing in the sea with her friends. 

Zeus se enamoró perdidamente de ella y decidió conquistarla, pero todo el mundo tenía miedo de los dioses. Así que bajó a la playa convertido en un hermoso toro blanco y además muy manso y muy tranquilo.

Zeus fell in love with her and decided he wanted her. However, as everyone was afraid of the Gods, he went down to the beach in the form of a beautiful white bull. It was not a normal bull, but a very tame and peaceful one.

La princesa Europa vio al precioso toro blanco en la orilla del mar y se acercó a él. Tenía un tacto agradable, le acarició el lomo y se montó en el toro como si fuera un caballo. 

The princess Europa saw the beautiful bull on the sea shore and she approached it. It felt good to touch so she stroked its back before she mounted it as if it were a horse. 

En ese momento el toro se adentró en el mar con la princesa agarrada a sus cuernos y nadaron y nadaron muy lejos hasta las costas de la isla mágica de Creta. 

At this moment the bull went into the sea with the princess holding onto its horns, and swam and swan very far, until they reached the magical island of Crete.

Allí se quedó a vivir Europa, en la misma isla donde estaba el laberinto de Dédalo. Y durante mucho tiempo nadie supo de ella. Su familia la buscaba por todas partes pero nadie la había visto, solo sus amigas dijeron que se había adentrado en el mar a lomos de un toro blanco.

Europa lived on this island, and for a long time no-one knew anything of her. Her family searched for her everywhere but nobody had seen her. Her friends told of how she went into the sea on the back of a white bull.

La familia de la princesa Europa se recorrió medio mundo buscándola.

- ¿Habéis visto a Europa?- preguntaban desesperados en cada lugar al que llegaban.

Pero nadie la había visto.

Europa´s family travelled half way around the world looking for her.

“Have you seen Europa?” they asked desperately in every place they came to.

But nobody had seen her. 

Su familia pasó por Italia y allí no había rastro de ella. Luego fueron a España, a Portugal, a Francia, a Alemania ... Se recorrieron todo el continente haciendo la misma pregunta.

- ¿Habéis visto a Europa?

Her family went to Italy but heard nothing. Then to Portugal, France, Germany and Spain, asking the same question.

Los habitantes de cada lugar se preguntaban unos a otros por Europa y así, de tanto mencionarla, todos los lugares por los que pasó la familia en busca de la princesa se llamaron Europa.

In turn, the people of these countries travelled to other countries nearby, also asking if anyone had seen the princess Europa.

Y mucha gente se pregunta cómo es que los familiares de Europa se recorrieron todo el continente y no la encontraron. Pero es que no pudieron llegar a Creta en ningún momento.

Many people asked how so many people could travel across the continent without finding any trace of the princess.

Resulta que por aquella época nadie podía acercarse a las costas de Creta porque un gigante de bronce llamado Talos impedía la entrada a la isla. Pero esa es otra historia que dejaremos para otro día.

The reason was that Crete was a magical island, and at that time nobody could go there because a bronze giant called Talos impeded the entrance to the island but that´s another story for another day.
