Who is in the colony?
Honey bee colonies consist of a single queen, hundreds of male drones (male bees) and 20,000 to 80,000 female worker bees.
Each honey bee colony also consists of developing eggs, larvae and pupae.

Queen Bee
I'm the Queen Bee.
I grow in 16 days and I live for 5-7 years.
The queen bee is important for the life of the colony.
There is one in a colony.
It lays about 2000 eggs a day.

Worker Bee

Workers are responsible for making honeycombs, cleaning combs, feeding the larvae, ventilating them, protecting the hive from external dangers, collecting nectar, pollen, propolis and water.
I'm a worker bee.
Worker bees are female bees.
There are thousands in a colony.
We live about 35-40 days.
Male Bee

I'm the largest individual of the colony.
I can't be fed because my tongue is short.
I can't defend myself because I have no needle.
To tell the truth I don't do much in the colony!
I live 55-60 days.

Bees are very hardworking.
The worker bees go the one flower to another collecting nectar.
They have a long tongue that helps them to obtain the nectar from flowers.
In one collection trip a bee visits 50 to 100 flowers.
Bees make around 1600 round trips to produce one ounce of honey.
Why are Bees so Important?
Bees are an essential ally in maintaining the balance of ecosystems and our agriculture. Bees play a crucial role in food security, nutrition, and biodiversity.
The main function of bees is pollination.
It means that if the bees were extinguished we would be without food and we wouldn't have ecosystems.

But it is not only humans that benefit from the food that exists thanks to bees..
Animals also eat vegetables, so they too would suffer if there were no bees.
Bees are an important health indicator of an ecosystem, as the existence of a bee colony in an ecosystem indicates its respective health.
Currently, bees are to disappear.
In recent years, around the world, millions of hives have been
eliminated..
This is very worrying, because, without them, there will not
be enough pollination to have fruit trees.
Their end could also bring about the end of humanity.
As Albert Einstein said:
“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.”

How to protect the bees?
Try to have plants which are “friends of the bees” in your garden, and never underestimate the importance of bees.
We, humans, must protect this species to continue to enjoy in the future all the things we have now.
