In a field in Nazareth filled with a radiant sun, the Child Jesus played with his little hands, kneading clay.
With the clay he started making birds with open wings that he happily put on the ground.
A man of bad temper passed him and tried to crush the birds with his feet.

Baby Jesus, very distressed, clapped his hands and the clay birds flew away.

The legend also adds that when Jesus was crucified, the swallows surrounded him and with their pink beaks removed the thorns from the crown that caused him atrocious suffering.

In the face of such severe pain, their wings were covered with mourning and never lost their black color, as we know them.
