of sailing

Once upon a time there lived in the Bunyya Forest
not far from Kingaroy a fairy named Lyn.
She loved living in the forest amongst the Bunya
trees and Strangle figs.
Fairy Lyn was always dreaming about sailing
on a yacht to faraway places.

One day there was a fire in the forest.
Fairy Lyn was safe, because she could fly above
the flames.
She was upset at seeing all of the animals
getting hurt.
Fairy Lyn decided to fly North

Fairy Lyn kept flying until she came to Sydney
Harbour.
She saw a beautiful yacht named "Exodus".
Fairy Lyn was happy again
The yacht was a yawl. That means it has two
masts. A large one and a smaller one aft of the
rudder.
The yacht was 'ferro'. That means it was made of
concrete. It was designed by Sparkman and
Steedman. The same designers who designed
"The Pink Lady", owned by Jessica Watson
Fairy Lyn just had to own it.

Fairy Lyn learned to sail Exodus on Sydney
Harbor.
She had a lovely time sailing under the
Sydney Harbor Bridge, past the Opera
House and the old fort La Perouse.

The day came when Fairy Lyn Sailed her yacht
out through the heads of Sydney Harbor. It
was exciting to live the dream of sailing up the
East Coast of Australia.
The yacht sailed out of the heads into fairly
calm seas at first light.
Exodus looked a picture with her Main sail,
Self-furling Jib and the little sail on the aft
mas. proudly catching the sea breezes.

One of the beautiful places Fairy Lyn visited
on her sail up north was Cape Tribulation.
She came a shore in her dinghy.
Exodus had to stay at anchor in the deeper
water.

Fairy Lyn sailed into Cooktown Harbor at
sunset.
It was a magnificent view. She looked across to
North Shore and beyond that to Hopevale.
The mountains in the distance were a dark
purple, fringed against the sky, with its orange,
pink and purple hues.
The lead lights twinkled in the dwindling light.

The next morning Fairy Lyn
walked up Grassy Hill to the
light house.
It was a beautiful view. She
could see Cape Flattery ahead.
Below was Cherry tree Tree
Bay.

Fairy Lyn walked down grassy Hill and went to
the wharf. She walked to the edge and peered
into the water. She could see a Dugon feeding
on the grass below the wharf

Fairy Lyn visited the Aboriginal Community on
Mornington Island.
She went for many walks along the rugged mostly
uninhabited coast.
Fairy Lyn was told many Dreamtime stories
about Moon, Rat and Squid. All the places had their
stories. They taught people how to look after the land
and each other.
She sat under a bark shelter to protect her from the
hot sun.

Fairy Lyn watched the Mornington Islander Dances
perform the Crocodile Corrobore.
They danced with the markings of their Clan group
on their chests and wore the conical hats woven
from hair. In the top are Emu feathers. There are
no emu's on Mornington Island, so they were
traded by the Mainlanders.

Fairy Lyn saw Aboriginal paintings that were painted in the
Dreamtime. They told stories about the Ancestral Spirits.
This painting is of the Quinkins. They lived in country up North.
They were thin so they could hide behind the sapling's. They
also had big ears for hearing.
The Quinkins would roll themselves up in their ears, like a
sleeping bag, to keep themselves warm.
One Quinkin is running very fast. You can tell because he has
his legs spread far apart.

Fairy Lyn woke up and rubbed her eyes.
She was sitting on a strangle fig swing at the
base of her favorite tree in the Bunya Forest,
the one she called, "The Magic Far Away Tree".
Was it all a dream?
Did she really sail away to far away places on a
yacht?
