April
is
National Poetry Month.
The Academy of American Poets began its
celebration in 1996. Across our nation in businesses,
organizations, bookstores, libraries, and schools all
persons who have a love of words, readers and/or
writers, can participate.

In classrooms poetry, for this one special
month, takes center stage. Writers that
didn't know they could write blossom as
they realize poetry has many forms.

ACROSTIC
Acrostic poems use the first letters of a
given word to begin the lines of a poem. If
the word has three letters, the poem will
have three lines.

Cinquain
A cinquain poem has five lines. There are
variations on the writing of a cinquain; some use a
certain number of syllables, others a certain
number or type of words.
For the first line pick a person, place or thing.
Follow with two adjectives describing the first
word. The next line is three words ending in --ing
relating to the first line. The fourth line is a
phrase further describing line one. The final
line is a synonym of the first line.

Diamante
A diamante poem is similar to a cinquain but the shape is a
diamond using seven lines. They are sometimes used to
contrast two words.
The first line is one word. The second is two describing
words. The third line is three ---ing words. The fourth line
is two nouns relative to line one and two nouns relative to
line seven. Line five contains three additional verbs. Two
more adjectives are contained in line five. A one word
synonym or another word of the writer's choice closes the
poem.

Haiku
An ancient form of Japanese poetry is
haiku. It consists of three lines. The first
line is five syllables, the second line is seven
syllables and the third line reverts back to
five syllables. Haiku poetry tends to honor
or relate to the world around us.
