We would like to dedicate this book to all the children at Arahoe School
and especially to the new children
who will be learning in this new building.

This book is a work in progress, just like the new
classroom is.
Photos of us - coming soon.

We would like to introduce you to
Blair, he is one of the builders
that is building the new
classroom.
He answers our questions and
tells us all about what he is doing.
Blair is wearing his tool belt which
carries the tools he needs to do
his job, and he has work boots on
to protect his feet just in case he
stands on a nail or drops
something on his foot.

What is happening here?
The digger needs to dig up the big rocks off the grass and
into the big hole so the rocks can reach the top of the
bricks. We were surprised to see a lady controlling the
digger. We think this is cool!

The man is using a digger to fill the big hole with stones
because it will need to be a flat ground to put the
concrete on. The machine sits on caterpillar tracks
because they make it stable. We think part of the
digger looks like a huge dinosaur claw, clawing at the
stones.

Here is another digger, but this one has wheels instead of
caterpillar tracks. It is getting the stones and spreading
them around to fill the gaps in so the concrete will be
strong. The digger is called a Bobcat.

The builder is using the compactor to compact the
gravel so when they put the concrete on it the
concrete doesn't go straight through any gaps.

We think he is making a hole to put a pipe in and he is
wearing a helmet so nothing hard can hit him. He is
wearing earmuffs because they protect his ears from
loud noises.

A worker is using a tool to cut wood into different
lengths to make the structure.

The area is ready to put
the concrete on.

The concrete
truck has
brought in the
wet cement.
If the barrel doesn't
keep spinning around
the cement will turn
into concrete and it
will set hard.

The cement is being pumped
along the pipe that is attached
to the very long arm of this
truck. We think the arm looks
like a leg from a 'daddy long
legs' spider.

There is a yellow
machine to tell you
if the ground is
level or not. Look
into the screen to
see. We asked
Dave, one of the
other builders and
he told us it is
called a dumpy.
In the background you can see a man guiding a machine
that puts cement on the ground in the grid.

They are putting the concrete in one part of the
area and the rest of the area is covered with steel
reinforcing sheets to make the concrete stronger.

Watch out! The cement is wet. Try not to get stuck.
This man is smoothing out the cement with a special
tool called a pole float, before the cement dries and
goes hard.
We don't want a bumpy floor in our new classroom.

The concrete is set and hard. The builders
can work on top of it now. They are getting
ready to build the framing for the walls and
the roof of the classroom.

The builders have put the framing for the walls
together. It will hold the walls up and also the roof.
The builders did not make the framing at school.
It was made at a factory and the builders had to
put it together like a jigsaw puzzle.

These are nails. The
nails go inside a nail gun.
A nail gun is like a gun
and the nails are like the
bullets.
Using a nail gun is easier
than using a hammer to
bang the nails. We think
using a nail gun would be
fun.

The steel beams have gone up. They have holes in
them so the builders can bolt pieces of wood into
them. We think that the builders are brave
because they have to work up high.

Blair has bolted wood to the blue steel beams so
he can join the roof framing to them. We think
this is a hard job to do.

The classroom is ready to attach the roof and the
outside walls because the framing is already
finished.

The roofing material is ready and waiting to be put
up on the classroom.

The builders used building paper to stick onto
the framing for the walls so no water can leak
into the new class.

Now the new classroom is ready to have it's
windows and outside cladding put on it.

They are almost finished the new classroom. The
windows are in and the outside cladding is on. Now
the builders will be working inside, getting it ready
for the new children.
