Evelyn O'Brien

Mrs. O'Brien was born in 1935 in Beverly, Kansas and was the
second to youngest child. She was born with brown hair and blue
eyes. Her mother was very strict.
She was apart of the "Dirty 30's." But through her struggle, she
had a radio and electricity so life didn't seem so upsetting. At age
5, she moved to Salina, Kansas because it was more modern. The
first thing she remembers hearing on the radio is Anne Frank
going into hiding. O'Brien hated the war. She felt very sorry for
what the Jews had to go through. She had a brother that fought
in World War 2. He was in the Navy. His boat broke in half and he
luckily survived. She also remembers hearing a lot about the War
at school.

In middle school, she was apart of her very first play.
Although she hated school, she did not get into trouble
and was a very good girl. She says it's "the perks of
having a strict mom."
While she was in school, they stopped class to talk
about the attack on Pearl Harbor and she was very
scared. She was also scared for African- American's to
get their rights.
"I remember hearing about the bus boycotts. My friends
would always run down streets screaming they deserved
rights. We always got dirty looks, but I didn't care."

In high school, Evelyn went to school at Central and
graduated in 1953. She hated high school too. Evelyn
was apart of the Pep Club and would go to many sport
events. She was into the dramatics and loved to sing.
Elvis, Johnny Cash, and country was all she listened to
during her high school years. At night, she would sneak
out and leave with her boyfriend because he had a car.
After high school, she worked at a shoe store and then
at a bank. And met her husband, Art.

Her husband, Art also worked at a bank. They were
married at 21 and had their first child, Karen at 21. They
were married to her favorite song "Unchained Melody."
Her most relivable moment was when she had her
children. Karen, Nick, and Becky. That was her happiest
moment. She met Art on a blind date. Evelyn wishes
that she could change her lifestyle when she got
married. She would spend less money and go to less
with her husband if she could go back time. While she
was back in time, she would bring back her husband.
She and her husband went to England for their
honeymoon.

Evelyn and my mom met at one of my
gymnastics meets. My mom didn't want to wait
and she asked Evelyn to get coffee. Evelyn
says that was the happiest moment of her life.
She and my mom get coffee every week now.
Her biggest regret is getting old and not being
able to drive or travel. She had a lot of fun
going to England but she really wants to go to
Germany. Her life turning point was when she
retired. She would love to get back into the
work force.

"I didn't have an exciting life, but I was very
happy. I had vanilla ice cream, and I was
happy. My favorite generation was the 60's. I
loved how happy it was. I had no cares in the
world. I have so many memories I wish I could
go back and relive, but I like where I'm at."
