Dedicated to Grandma Elva
-Much Love, Alondra

Where were you born?
From a ranch near the town of Jerez named El Nino Jesus

What is your favorite thing about your home town?
A big celebration they held every 3rd of May where everyone danced. It was so much fun.

What did you for fun as a child?
Playing with my friends. Jump roping, old games we played to entertain ourselves.

What hobbies do you carry out today?

Playing with my grandchildren and knitting every now and then.

How did you live your teenage years?

My dad didn't really let me or my siblings go out so I didn't get to enjoy my teenage years.
What was it like to raise 4 children?

It was really difficult but I managed to do it by lots of hard work.
What was your first job?

I worked as nanny. I took care of a lady's children while she ran her store.
What was your dream job?
I wanted to be a teacher, but that did not work out.

How did you meet my grandpa?

If I remember correctly, we met at a party.

How did you find out about Kansas?
I found out about Kansas because my second oldest child, Rafael, was living here- in Salina Kansas.

Why did you move to Salina?

So I could be near my sons and daughters; I don't like the idea of being separated from my family. I previously had been living in California.
How old were you when you first started working?

I started working at a pretty young age. I started working once I turned 12 years old.
What motivated you to move to the U.S.?

To offer my children a better life. I also already had some children living here and I wanted to be close to them.
If you could live anywhere, where would you live?

I would like to live in Los Angeles, it seems like such a nice place to live.
What is the origin of your last name?

I'm not completely positive but I'm pretty sure it's from Spain.
How did you manage to potty train all off your grandchildren?

It really was not that difficult. You all understand what I was asking from you- you're all so smart. You were potty trained by the time you were 1 and 1/2 years old. Plus, I also have tons of patience, something you must have especially with young kids.
Did you expect to have mostly all granddaughters?

No, but i am most definitely not complaining.
What was your favorite food as a child?

I would have to say fruit in general. As a child, we ate rice and beans everyday, so when we got fruit for a change, I would get so excited.

How did you get around before automobiles?
Walking. We would walk everywhere- to the market, school, work, church- everywhere.

Do you remember any war events?

No, not really, but I do remember when the Twin Towers were hit.

Where were you during 9/11?
I was at home, here in Salina, with my children, cooking breakfast when every thing happened. I had recently just moved to Salina too.

What was the hardest part of your life?
Raising my 4 children.
What was your biggest regret?
I have none.

What was your proudest moment?
Getting to be near my family and living with them.

Advice to teenagers?
To study a lot, be kind to your parents, do not fall into peer pressure and get involved in anything bad like alcohol, drugs, gangs, etc.
