In Spain, we have a lot of superstitions related to 1st November. On that day we celebrate All Saints Day in honour of all the saints, known and unknown.
Some of these superstitions are:
- Black cat: if a black cat crosses your path you will be unlucky this day.
- Fingers crossed: you must cross your fingers to get bad luck away.
- Broken mirror: if you break a mirror in your house , you will be unlucky till you clean it well.
- Go under a ladder: you must go round a ladder, never under it!.

Superstitions can amuse, embarrass or annoy! Although we know that "it's just a superstition," and we do not openly admit that we believe in them, we sometimes make gestures to keep us away from trouble. We will not go any further if the black cat has cut our way - although at night all cats are black! - we do not like to see ambulances or do not step on the canal. Superstitions are bizarre, from one country to another, but some can be found across a continent.
