

Luís de Camões
I really admire Luís Vaz de Camões. He was a brilliant poet, as well as a good writer.
He’s famous today because he wrote the “Os Lusíadas”.
Camões was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1524.
When he was a child, he lived at the time of the great marine discoveries.
Later, he went to university in Coimbra. He liked history, geography and literature.
In 1572 he released a composition “Os Lusíadas”.
In addition to that, in 1547, he fought against the Moors and during a fight lost his right eye. After that he returned to Lisbon.
He died on the 10 of June in 1580.

Fernando Pessoa
I really admire Fernando Pessoa. He was an amazing portuguese poet. He’s famous today because he wrote beautiful poems.
Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1888.
When he was a child, his father died and he moved with his mother and stepfather to South Africa. Later, in Africa, he studied at Durban High School.
In 1901, Fernando Pessoa wrote his first poems and in 1905 he returned to Portugal. He wrote some poems like “Antinous”, “Inscriptions”, and “Mensagem, 1934”…
Fernando Pessoa died in 1935, in Lisbon.

Eusébio
I admire Eusébio. He became famous because he was one of the best footballers ever.
Eusébio was born in Maputo, Mozambique, on 25th January, 1942.
When he was a student , he used to miss classes to play football with his friends . Later, Eusébio played for Sporting, during 15 of his 22 years as a football player, being mainly associated with the Portuguese club.
In 1960 he went to Benfica and started playing in the first Portuguese league.
He won the Golden Ball as the best European player in 1965.
Eusébio died in Lisbon on the 5th January, 2014.

Cristiano Ronaldo
I really admire Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a famous footballer. He was born in Funchal, Madeira in Portugal.
When he was a child he loved football but his life was shaped by hardship, as his family was poor. To help keep the children fed and maintain some financial stability, Ronaldo's mother worked as a cook and cleaning person.
Later he started playing in Clube de Futebol Andorinha de Santo António but some years later Sporting Clube De Portugal discovered his talent and hired him.
In 2018 he joined Juventus and he is playing there since then. In his career he won many trophies and is one of the best footaballers os all time.

Amália Rodrigues
I really admire Amália Rodrigues.
she was a Portuguese fado singer,generally acclaimed as the voice of Portugal and one of the most brilliant singers of the 20th century.
She is famous today because she became known worldwide as the Queen of Fado.
Amália was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1920. When she was a child, his gift for singing soon revealed itself. Amália was very shy, but she started singing for her grandfather and the neighbours, who used to invite her. In his childhood and youth she sang the tangos and popular songs he heard from Carlos Gardel and asked him to sing.
Later, she met her future husband, an amateur guitarist, whom she will marry in 1940. After that at the age of 24, Amália already had a show designed exclusively for her. And it was from that moment on that Amália began her long and fantastic career.
She died in Lisbon, on October 6, in 1999.

Mariza
I really admire Mariza. She was a brilliant singer. She’s famous today because she is a great fado singer.
Mariza was born in Moçambique, in 1973. His father worked as a manager in a Dutch company called Zuid. During the exodus of Portuguese families in the former Portuguese overseas colonies, his father left Mozambique with his family, choosing Lisbon to start a new life. In 1979, they reopened the restaurant Zalala in the typical Lisbon neighbourhood, Mouraria, birthplace of Fado and frequented by countless Fado singers of reference, such as Fernando Maurício and Artur Batalha as well as Alfredo Marceneiro Jr. At the age of 7, Mariza sang for the first time at the Casa de Fado Adega Machado. Zalala, now closed, the restaurant where Mariza grew up, was so named after a Mozambican beach.
Mariza has released several albums and is currently known internationally.

Ruy de Carvalho
Ruy Alberto Rebelo Pires de Carvalho is a very famous actor from Portugal. He is very famous because he represented (and still does) a lot of soap operas and plays. Ruy de Carvalho was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1927.
His career started in 1942, in the play “O jogo para o Natal de Cristo”, as an amateur. He was professionally debuted in 1947 in the Nacional Theater in the comedy “Rapazes de hoje”. His last soap opera, for now, was at SIC, where he gave life to the character Floriano Marques in Nazaré.
He won important prizes for his great work like the Cultural Merit Medal in 1990; the Cultural Award in 1998; the Personality of the year in Theatre in 1999; the Best Actor in Fiction and Comedy in 2002; the Sophia Award in 2017. He also won two Golden Globes, one for the Personality of the year, and one for the Best Actor.
He is now 94 years old and he hopefully continues to toast us with his magnificent work. Rafaela

I really admire Daniela Ruah. She is a portuguese actress. She's famous today because she participated in a series in the United States called NCIS: Los Angeles.
Daniela was born in Boston, United States, in 1983. When she was a child she and her family moved to Portugal. She studied at na english school in Portugal. Later, she went to London Metropolitan University.
Later, she returns to Portugal to develop at a profissional level. Performed several importante roles in television, theater and cinema. In addition, in 2007 was to New York to study at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute to start working internationally. The first job in United States was to participate in the series NCIS: Los Angeles.

Miguel Torga
I really admire Adolfo Correia da Rocha, better known as Miguel Torga. He was a poet and a portuguese writter, as well as a doctor. He was indicated to The Nobel Prize in Literature, between 1959 and 1966.
Miguel Torga was born in Vila Real, Portugal, in 12th august 1907. When he was a child, he moved to Porto to be an employee and one year later, he was fired. In 1918, he was sended to the seminary in Lamego and he studied History, Portuguese, Latin and Geography. Later, he told his father that he doesn´t wanna be a priest. In 1920, he moved to Brazil and, in 1928, he went to the college in Coimbra, Portugal.
He wrote his first book, called «Ansiedade». He also collaborated to the magazine «Presença». In 1930, he released the «Rampa», in 1931 the «Tributo e Pão Ázimo», in 1936 the «O outro livro de Job» and many more. He published more than 50 books. He married with a Belgian student in 1940. He died from cancer at 1955.

Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen
I really admire Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen. She was a amazing poet, as well a good writer.
She’s famous today because she was the first Portuguese woman to win the “Prémio Camões”. Sophia was born in Porto, Portugal, in 6 november 1919
When she was a jevenile, she studied Classical Philology at the University of Lisbon. In 1940 he published his first verses in the “Cadernos de Poesia.
In addition she dedicated to literature, in that same year he wrote several poetry, among them, “O Jardim e a Casa”, “Casa Branca”, “O Jardim Perdido” and “Jardim e a Noite”, works that recall his childhood and youth.
She died in Lisbon, Portugal on the 2nd of July,2004

Egas Moniz
I really admire António Egas Moniz. He was a brilliant
doctor as well as a famous neuroscientist. He’s famous today because he discovered brain arteriography and won a Nobel Prize.
António Egas Moniz was born in Estarreja, Portugal, in
1874. Their parents had many financial difficulties, which led them to give up their child's education. When he was a child, he went to school every day on foot, but was accompanied by an employee. He slept in the maid's room because he was afraid of the night.
He studied medicine in Coimbra, where he later became a full professor. He specialized in neurology and psychiatry in France, returning to Portugal in 1911, already in the time of the republic.

He was also a politician. He was the founder of the Centrist Republican Party.
In 1907, he consulted Fernando Pessoa who complained of neurasthenia and the fear of going mad. He also consulted Mário de Sá Carneiro, who complained of the physical and symbolic unfolding.
António Egas Moniz wrote three books: History of playing cards; Die cerebrale Arteriographie und Phlebographie; Medical Conferences. He died in 1955, in Lisboa, Portugal when he was 81 (eighty-one) years old.
Vasco da Gama
I really admire Vasco da Gama. He was a navigator and a portuguese explorer.
Vasco da Gama was born in Sines, Portugal, in 1469.
When he was young, he studied in Évora, where he learned maths and navigation. Also, he learned a lot about astronomy. In 1492, he was sent by D.João II to capture the french ships.
He performed that task quickly and effectively.
On 8th July, 1497, he was nominated captain of one of the ships to India. He performed a circle way to the South Atlantic and after a few days, he went through the «cabo da Boa Esperança». In 1498, they arrived to India.
On 24th December, 1524, he died in Cochim, India. His great adventures were written in «Os Lusíadas», from Luís de Camões.

D. Afonso Henriques
I really admire D. Afonso Henriques. He was a great warrior as well as the first king of Portugal.
He is famous today because he founded the Kingdom of Portugal.
D. Afonso Henriques was born in 1109. When he was a child, he stayed in Guimarães. Later, he was educated by Egas Moniz.
In 1128, he fought against his mother in the Battle of S. Mamede. In addition, he obtained Castile’s approval in the Treaty of Zamora, in 1143, founding the Kingdom of Portugal. After that, he continued the Christian Reconquest.
Afonso Henriques died in 1185, in Coimbra.
