At the beginning of the 19th century, Livorno ,the city of the Granducato of Tuscany, had more than 50.000 inhabitants. It was beautyful, expanding dominated by the Habsburg Lorraine and their Grand Duke ruled Florence

Our port was the fifth port in the Meditteraneo
and even if event of the steamship a bit .It would have revolution the trades that thet rotated around port.
With these ships without sails and train It will be all fast, we will have to adpat or disappear
Meanwhile, in the city, great works are carried out..
Today we inaugurate, after 13 years of work, the great preserve, the final point of collection of the spring waters of Colognole, the work of the famous architect Pasquale Poccianti
We have the most beautiful acqueduct of Italy!

I was the declaration of free port, free from customs duties and sanitary taxes, and the new walls to give great impulse to the city. It was around 1835, the years of Leopoldo II
The engineer Alessandro Manetti and Carlo Reishammer erected the lorenesi walls
What a wonder! eight kilometers of customs walls with gates and barriers to expand the city

Great works were completed along with the Livorno Pisa railway which allowed Charlkes Dickens to come to Italy

A signal of hope arrives also from the much awaited development of the port that, in 1853 , became reality
Citizens, shortly the intense activities for the curved dam
of the new pier of the port will begin. They will be guided by the French engineer Vittorio Poirel
the works ended in 1860.The cost of the works was impressive: 8 millions Lire of the time
36 million of euro

do you know how much a ship ot that kind cost two million and four hundred thousand lire more or less.
The last ship costruction at the Mediceo arsenal was the ''Magenta'' commissioned in 1859 by the Tuscan nauy which was delivered in July 17th 1862

We cannot abolish it! New fees will destroy the cargo port. It will be the end for this city. And Livorno must have the province that until now has been denied
The debate went on until 1868. The abolition of the free port marked the end of Livorno's merchant dominion in the Mediterranean Sea
It wont be the end! The free port is over. We must take a step towards modernity we must concentrate everything on shipbuilding.

The dispute on the free port effectively hid a change of course : the use of iron and steel changed the naval industry.

In a short time, under the expert guidance of Luigi Orlando, naval engineer andformer director of the arsenal of Genoa, the "Orlando brothers yard", became a worldwide excellence.
