Media Literacy

Osman Nuri Bakırcı Secondary School

The digital age has made it easy for anyone to create media. We don't always know who created something, why they made it, and whether it's credible. This makes media literacy tricky to learn and teach. Nonetheless, media literacy is an essential skill in the digital age.
Specifically, it helps kids:
Learn to think critically. As kids evaluate media, they decide whether the messages make sense, why certain information was included, what wasn't included, and what the key ideas are.
Become a smart consumer of products and information. Media literacy helps kids learn how to determine whether something is credible.
Recognize point of view. Every creator has a perspective. Identifying an author's point of view helps kids appreciate different perspectives.

Create media responsibly. Recognizing your own point of view, saying what you want to say how you want to say it, and understanding that your messages have an impact is key to effective communication.
Identify the role of media in our culture. From celebrity gossip to magazine covers to memes, media is telling us something, shaping our understanding of the world, and even compelling us to act or think in certain ways.
Understand the author's goal. What does the author want you to take away from a piece of media? Is it purely informative, is it trying to change your mind, or is it introducing you to new ideas you've never heard of? When kids understand what type of influence something has, they can make informed choices.
Digital Footprint

Digital footprint or digital shadow refers to one's unique set of traceable digital activities, actions, contributions and communications manifested on the Internet or digital devices. Digital footprints can be classified as either passive or active. The former is composed of a user's web-browsing activity and information stored as cookies. The latter is often released deliberately by a user to share information on websites or social media. While the term usually applies to a person, a digital footprint can also refer to a business, organization or corporation.

The use of a digital footprint has both positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, it is the subject of many privacy issues.[7] For example, without an individual’s authorization, strangers can piece together information about that individual by only using search engines. Corporations are also able to produce customized ads based on browsing history. On the other hand, others can reap the benefits by profiting off their digital footprint as social media influencers. Furthermore, employers use a candidate’s digital footprint for online vetting and assessing fit due to its reduced cost and accessibility.

A digital footprint is the impression you create on the internet through your online activity, which includes browsing, interactions with others, and publication of content. In other words, it is the trail of data – intentional and unintentional - you leave behind while surfing the internet. When a site you visit drops a "cookie" in your browser, it contributes to your digital footprint.
This trail of data consists of your posts on social media platforms, your “private” correspondences (i.e. email), the websites you visit, and even the records of your online purchases.

There are two main classifications of digital footprints: active and passive. An active footprint can be defined as the intentional data trail that an individual leaves behind, such as:
-Sending someone an email (you intend for it to be seen by someone)
-Publishing a blog
This means that a passive footprint would be defined as the unintentional traces that an individual creates on the internet, such as:
-Using apps and websites that use geolocation to pinpoint a user’s whereabouts

Fake News

The Internet is an incredible resource for news and information, but unfortunately not everything online is trustworthy. Fake news is false or misleading information presented as news.

It often has the aim of damaging the reputation of a person or entity, or making money through advertising revenue.
While fake news is not unique to the Internet, it has recently become a big problem in today’s digital world.

Be careful with what you read or listen to while you are online. Fake news have a much higher impact on society since the advent of the internet. They can influence social behaviour, politics and even people's health.

Fake News, which stands for fake news, is news written to mislead the reader. This type of news, called "infox" in French, is deceptive. Also, by using traditional media or social media, it tends to misinform the reader and mislead him.
