Achilles, born of King Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis, was at first
sight a strong and capable youth, and he was. However, since his mother was
continually fearful for his health, she dipped his body into the River Styx in the
Underworld, therefore making him almost immortal, except for his heel. After this,
he was very powerful indeed.
However, in his father’s palace, safe from all harm day and night, he
eventually grew bored and wished for some great adventure for him to take on-
consequently, when he snook out of his home one night to venture into the wild
lands, he did not think much of it. Sadly, among Achilles’ many gifts, luck at that
time wasn’t one of them. Crossing the mountains that led to Sparta, Achilles
stumbled upon two Cyclopes.

Not having any weapons or armor, Achilles did pretty well for having only fists.
However, he was overcome by the two monstrosities. Outraged by the bloody
nose and the broken arm, the biggest Cyclops grabbed him by the legs and flung
him so hard that Achilles disappeared into the heavens. For a while, it looked like
he was never going to come back down- then his flailing body came zooming out
of the sky and crashed heavily into the ground, creating a humongous crater on
the ground, instantly knocking him out, but not killing him, for he was Achilles.
Their threat neutralized, the Cyclopes turned and headed on their way.

It would be many days that Achilles lay where
he was, unconscious and vulnerable to wild
animals, until one day the wise centaur Chiron
found him, horribly wounded and left for dead,
and slowly nursed him back to health.

Chiron could see that Achilles had the potential
to become a powerful and mighty warrior as
well as a Greek legend, so he wasted no time
in training Achilles in the art of combat.

Achilles was a fast learner, and not before long
even Chiron himself was amazed by his
swiftness of foot, his might of sword, and his
lethalness of bow and arrow. Chiron remarked
that were as skilled as Achilles.

Once Chiron deemed Achilles ready to explore
the world on his own, he set out right away to
exact revenge on the Cyclopes who had so
injured him years ago. All throughout the
Spartan mountains he searched, until one day
he finally found the cave where the two
Cyclopes resided.

Seeing the ugly brutes again drove Achilles
into a mad fighting frenzy- his sword flashed
like lightning around the cave, his feet flew as
if they were hovering, and before long two
one-eyed heads rolled to one corner of the
cave, and two giant bodies crumpled in
another.

Achilles had not expected to find anything
important in the back of the cave, but he did-
Ajax, son of Telamon, being guarded by two
more Cyclopes. Again his sword flashed, his
spear found its mark, and down went the
Cyclopes before they even had time to raise
their clubs. Having freed of his shackles, Ajax
rejoiced at the sight of his old friend.
