Once upon a time there was a caterpillar named
Iggy. He was an inch long and had to constantly
worry about being eaten. One day when he
inching along he saw a peculiar bug he had never
laid eyes on before. He noticed a net nearby and
he quickly tried to gain the bugs attention by
screaming as loud as he could in his tiny little
voice. Thankfully his warning was loud enough.
The bug quickly flew down and narrowly escaped.
When it was close enough Iggy realized that it
was not a bug but a fairy!

The fairy was of course very grateful to Iggy for
saving her from capture. In her gratitude she
offered to grant any wish his heart desired. Iggy
tired of always having to run politely asked the
fairy if she could help him escape the next time
he was in trouble. The fairy stated she could do
better than that. She would help him train with
her magic so that eventually in one leap he
would be able to escape his predators. They
agreed to meet up in the same place the next
day to begin the training.

The next day the fairy began talking Iggy through
what she would do. While the fairy's magic was
strong, she would not be able to help him forever.
She stated that she would help him train for ten
days. Iggy was very grateful to the fairy but
wanted to know how he would move faster and
how quickly his speed would improve. The fairy
told him she would teach him how to hop. Each
day he would be able to hop twice as far as the
last.
After teaching him how to hop he gave it a try. He
jumped one inch.

Iggy was dissatisfied with the length of his
hop, even though it was very impressive that
he had jumped his full length in one leap. The
fairy reassured him that he would improve.
She marked where he had jumped to with a
rock. She told him to meet her back by the
rock the next day.

The next day Iggy came back as promised.
The fairy told him to try hopping again. With
the help of her magic he jumped a two inches!
Iggy was impressed that the length of his
jumps had doubled so quickly. The fairy
marked where he had jumped to with a rock
and they agreed to meet again the next day.

When he greeted the fairy at their next
training session he was astonished when the
fairy told him that he would be able to hop four
inches this time! When he gave it a try he was
surprised to find out she was correct! She
marked his progress with a rock again.

And so they fell into a pattern of meeting each
day. And everyday the fairy would mark Iggy's
progress with a rock. They next day his hop
doubled in length again. Now he could leap
eight inches!

Iggy was surprised to find he had left the
shelter of his patch of grass. The fairy assured
him and told him that he would be safe. By
marking the distance from one jump to the
next and having him jump from where he
previously landed, she would be able to show
how far he had hopped in total. Iggy thought
that was a wonderful way to encourage him
and show his progress and told the fairy how
much he appreciated her doing that.

Iggy was very proud of his progress but the
fairy boasted that his hops would only get
better! When he tried hopping again he leaped
sixteen inches.

When Iggy hopped from the previous rock he jumped
thirty two inches!
