Dedicated to my nephew Aiden.
Simon stared at the poster that hung in his classroom. “Art Festival
Competition! Hand in your artwork for a chance of having it featured
in the year book!” Only 4th graders could enter the competition.
Simon couldn’t wait- he finally had his chance to compete!
After school that day, Simon asked his parents about entering
the festival.

“Look look! I can finally enter the festival!” Simon joyfully said
to his parents. “That’s great Simon! Would you like to look at
the art from last year’s festival? That way you can think of
ideas.” Simon excitedly agreed as they got ready to leave.

Simon and his parents entered the school’s cafeteria, where
pictures of art work from last year was displayed. Simon ran
up to the pictures, looking very closely at each one. Drawings,
paintings, handmade displays…so many different ideas!

“Look at that one Simon! Oh, and that one!” his parents said as
they pointed from picture to picture. “Do you have any ideas
now on what you’d like to do for the festival?” his dad asked.

“Well…all this artwork is great! But- I want to try something
different. Not just a drawing, painting, or display. Hmm…”
Simon thought to himself.
“You’ll think of something, don’t worry.” Assured his parents, as
they made their way back home.

Simon couldn’t get to sleep that night. He thought long and
hard. “What could I do different?” He asked himself. Simon
suddenly remembered the magazines his mom had. Pages of
them would have a bunch of pictures pasted together to cover
an entire page. “A collage, I’ll make a collage! No one ever made
a collage before!”

The next day at school, Simon sat next to his classmate Levi. Levi
was very artistic and always had the best art in art class. He liked
to pick on other kid’s artwork if he didn’t like it.
When he saw Simon sign the “art festival” sign-up sheet, he
laughed. “Haha, YOU’RE going to enter the art festival?” Levi
pointed at Simon. Simon sat still and quiet, ignoring Levi’s mean
attitude. He was too busy thinking of his idea for a collage.

In art class, Simon began his collage. He brought from home a
few pictures of his family and some magazines. He looked
through the magazines, looking for things he liked. A
skateboard, a playground, a swimming pool, cats, dogs, his
favorite foods and many more things that he liked.
He cut these items out of the magazines in different shapes
and sizes. Levi was near, drawing a huge picture of dragon. Levi
always drew dragons.

Levi took a look at Simon’s collage. “What the heck is that
supposed to be Simon? It looks like one big mess!” Yelled Levi
with a crooked look on his face. “It’s a collage. It’s supposed to
look like that...” Simon replied.
Simon felt his entire body get hot with anger, and his eyes begun
to swell and tear up. “Whatever you say, cry baby!” Levi walked
back to his drawing with a smirk on his face.

It was just two days before the festival. Simon had to hand in
his artwork by the next day, so the judges can look at it before
displaying it. Simon took a look at his final piece. He pressed
out all the bumps and air bubbles so the collage was smooth and
neat.
He was worried, though. All he could remember was Levi making
fun of his collage. “Looks like a mess, he said. Maybe he’s
right, no one makes collages. They look messy.”

The next morning Simon felt sick to his stomach. He was making his way
to the school bus before he heard his mom yell “Simon, your collage!” His
mom ran out to him holding the collage in front of her and handed it to
Simon as he faked a smile. Now he felt really sick to his stomach.

Simon sat at an empty desk in the classroom, his collage faced
down. Levi came over and sat right across from him with a big
smile on his face. “Look at MY artwork, Simon. Isn’t it great!”
Simon looked at Levi’s dragon drawing. It was a great drawing,
like always, but Simon noticed something.

“It is good, but…” “BUT WHAT?” snapped Levi. “It…looks like all
the other dragons you drew. It’s a different color, different
size, but it looks exactly like all the others you drew.” Levi’s
face turned so red, Simon thought steam would come out his
ears! “Ugh how dare you!” Screamed Levi as he went and sat at
a different desk, far away from Simon.

Simon suddenly felt much better. He flipped his collage over
and looked at it one last time. He was proud of what he made,
and Levi wasn’t going to take that away. Simon handed his
collage to his teacher, worrying all day if he would win or not.
