William was a young boy, no more than seven, when his father told him he would begin his knight training. William never truly wanted to be a knight. He knew how important this position was and he knew he could protect his father as he got older, but he resented the idea of performing as a knight. He lost his brother to this line of duty and hated it ever since. His father would remind of how important being a knight was. He never understood it. Men wore armor and were praised for what they did. But all he saw was death. Being a knight meant dying. He didn't want to die and leave his father behind. So, every time William asked "why" his father always answered him.
"Well, because my son you not only protect nobles but you also protect people like us. You are a huge military weapon for us. Not just that but you're seen as a romantic figure. We also provide for you as do the nobles." His father would respond, soft smile on his face.
"Really, father? Is that true?" William's eyes would go wide as he looked up at his father. His eyes were brown stars.
"Would I ever lie to you son?" His father chuckled. "You my son, play a huge part in the feudal system."
This made the young boy feel important.
"So, I can provide for both you, father, and the nobles. I'm important?"
William's father nods.
"Very important. Your brother knew of this as well. That is why even when he was your age, he was prepared to train and go from a simple squire to a knight. Your brother was incredibly brave." His father's deep grungy voice was speaking such soothing words to him, it eased his doubtful mind.
"Then, father, I will work my very hardest in order to become the greatest knight and protect you!" William's soft brown eyes could light up the galaxy with how big and bright they were.
