PBL Video: I especially liked the statement from one
man on the video about replacing curriculum, thinking
students have to learn this on this day. Replacing it
with learning this when you need it will help students
learn better and be more motivated. Project-based
learning makes students more responsible for their
learning by having them be challenged in real world
applications of the subjects in which they are learning.
I think that a big issue to do this like in the video is
the technology available to the schools. Those that do
not have things, such as laptops available will have to
research more of how to use project based learning in
the classroom.

Assignment 1: Algebra 2
In this assignments, students use different hands on
materials to look at probability situations. Stations are
set up around the room and students work in groups.
The stations include, m&m guess then count (theoretical
vs experimental probability), rolling dice (theoretical vs
experimental probability), lottery cards (combinations or
permutations), playing cards (combinations or
permutations), and drawing marbles out of a bag
(combinations or permutations). The students have
directions at each station what to do and are giving a
handout to record their data. Each station is timed and
students rotate until they have been to all the stations.

Assignment 2: Algebra 2
Using Cellphones to discuss, make, and graph
systems of equations. Students will look at
their phone bill, see how much usage goes to
text and how much going to voice. They will
make a system of equations looking at the
total price with a partner. They will graph it on
a large graph paper and discuss their findings
with the class.

Assignment 3: Algebra 2
Stock Investigation. This is a year long project that
allows students to research the stock market, while
using their skills in technology, graphing, and linear
regression. They pick up to 3 stocks and have to keep
up with it over a 40 week time period. They are to look
at previous stock pries and come up with a line of
regression and change it a little when necessary. They
compare their projections to their actual stock prices
and find key reasons why their stocks have risen or
taken a fall. The present it once a semester by using a
variety presentation. Most students end of picking
PowerPoint, but some use Prezi and one student even
used an animated video.

In many cases, students do not
integrate what they have learned.
Problem based learning encourages
students to engage in the cognitive
process. Since they are to be actively
engaged, according to Barrett and
Moore, students will acquire,
comprehend, apply, structure, and
integrate their ongoing knowledge
(Barrett & Moore, 2011).
Teaching Strategies

Scaffolding allows for students to take
difficult tasks and find them more
accessible. It allows students to
become better problem solvers by given
instruction from teachers, mentors, and
peers. Teachers guide students in the
learning process, by pushing them to
think and model questions that students
need to be asking themselves (Silver,
Duncan, and Chinn, 2007).
