brought him to the vet right away, Dr. Lee was able to prevent it from
happening. She also learned tons of information from Dr. Lee that way,
so that she herself wouldn't get sick.

Dr. Lee, what is rabies?
You don't need to worry about Tuckie, Kim.It's a good thing that he was given a
pre-exposure vaccine against rabies before
so he is perfectly okay.

Rabies is a viral disease that only mammals getand it can be extremely dangerous if it is not
treated properly and immediately. Rabies can be
transmitted by vectors, these are high-risk mammals
who carry the disease but are not affected by it.
Some examples of rabies vector speciesare bats, raccoons, foxes, and skunks.

Make sure that you and your pets are careful around theseanimals! They might be infected by rabies and transmit the
disease to you or your pet through biting, licking,
or scratching. Your pet can give you this disease in the same
way.
HOW IS
RABIES
TRANSMITTED?
A good way of preventing this to happen is letting your pet get a pre-exposure rabies vaccine. This will help protect them from
getting infected by rabies. If you are going to a place with many
vector animals for a long period of time, or if you are
constantly around animals, you should also consider taking the
vaccine.
HOW CAN I
PREVENT IT?
11

Step 1: Wash the wound immediately with warm soap and water.
WHAT DO I DO IF GET BITTEN BY
A WILD ANIMAL?
Step 2: Call your doctor or your local health department rightaway for instructions.
Step 3: Report the animal to your local animal control. Do not touch it and do not try to capture it!
Step 4: You will need to get post-exposure vaccinationright immediately. REMEMBER: Even if you got the pre-exposure
rabies vaccine, you will still need to get post-exposure
vaccines if you get bitten by an infected animal.
