Proclamation Line of 1763Date: 1763
What happened: The British announced that the land west
of the Appalachian Mountains would be reserved for the
Native Americans. They thought this would allow the
colonists to remain safe without having to use their troops
for protection.
Contribution: This made it clear to the colonists that the
British intended to maintain even tighter control over the
colonists which angered them.
If I were a colonist: If I were a colonist when this happened,
I would've been furious because we were the ones who
fought and won the land and now we wouldn't be able to
use it. This would cause me to want to rebel. With help, I
would've taken a stand.

Sugar ActDate: 1764
What happened: The government out a tax on foreign refined
sugar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo, and most French
alcohol was banned.
Contribution: This angered the colonists because they wanted
a say in the running of their government.
If I were a colonist: If I were a colonist, I wouldn't get too
angry about the tax about first. Though, once it were to hit me
that the colonists had no say in the government, I would
become very mad. After realizing this, I probably wouldn't but
sugar in order to rebel.

Quartering ActDate: 1765
What happened: This act required colonists to allow British
soldiers to stay in their homes. They had to provide food and
everything for the soldiers.
Contribution: This caused the colonists to become suspicious
of the troops. They thought they were sent to control them.
If I were a colonist: If I were a colonist I would've grown very
nervous. Having to allow soldiers into my home would make
me think they were thinking about war.

Stamp ActDate: 1765
What happened: The colonists had to pay a tax on printed
materials to help pay for Britain's debt. This act was eventually
repealed.
Contribution: This act made the colonists feel that their
freedom was being threatened. It started boycotting.
If I were a colonist: This would have angered me because we
were having to pay so much tax. I would've joined in the
boycotting.

Townshend ActDate: 1767
What happened: The government imposed a small "indirect"
tax on glass, lead, paper, and tea. The tax was "indirect"
because it was collected at sea ports (it was just added to the
total cost) so hopefully the colonists wouldn't notice.
Contribution: The colonists noticed the tax and organized a
huge boycott of British goods. The "indirect" tax infuriated the
colonists.
If I were a colonist: I would have been furious at the
government for trying to hide a tax from me. This may have
caused me to think about leaving or start to rebel.

Boston MassacreDate: March 5, 1770
What happened: A mob of colonists harassed British troops,
which quickly grew out of hand. The troops killed 5 unarmed
colonists.
Contribution: The British troops were removed after colonists
demanded their removal for shooting when they thought it
wasn't necessary.
If I were a colonist: I honestly wouldn't have been to mad
about it. After all, the colonists did start it. I probably wouldn't
have done anything about it unless I had a connection with a
colonist who was harmed.

Boston Tea PartyDate: 1773
What happened: The Tea Act meant colonists could only buy
tea from the British West Indies Company angered the
colonists. The Sons of Liberty dressed as Native Americans,
raided three ships, and destroyed three hundred forty chests
of tea.
Contribution: This lead to the intolerable acts and caused the
colonists to have to pay for all the lost tea.
If I were a colonist: I would've felt that we did the right thing.
After all, we can't just sit around and let the government do
this to us. I probably would've wanted to join in and help
them.
