This book is dedicated to Ms. E. Delgado's 3rd-grade class at M.A. Milam K-8 Elementary, 2021

It was a warm, breezy spring day, and Callie, a small, lazy cat, thought it was a good idea to rest on the small wooden crate her mom placed outside just for her. Callie slept here most afternoons, waiting for her mom to come home. As Callie stretched across the wooden box, her fluffy white fur painted with shades of orange and black sparkled under the clear, blue sky. The sun was bright, and Callie liked how the sun hit her face and warmed her fur. She began falling asleep when she heard the familiar heavy footsteps of her best friend, Charlie. As the sound got closer, she stretched her paws and sat up to find him looking very proud.
Charlie was a big, active dog with long floppy ears. His fur looked like a white sheet of paper with spots of black ink. "Hey, Callie! Look at what my dad got me, Charlie said excitedly.
"That's a nice shirt, Charlie. It really makes your spots stand out, Callie replied. "My dad got me this shirt and was so excited when he put it on me today. And look! It has all of these great words on it. I bet it says my name! Do you think you can read to me what it says?", Charlie asked.
Callie began sounding out each letter. "B/b/e/e/s/s/t/t/, best p/p/e/e/t/t/, pet.
"Best pet!", Callie said, suddenly wide awake. "What! Charlie, what did you do to get that shirt? How did you earn it?"
Charlie was confused. "I don't know; what do you mean? I just got it," Charlie replied.
"No, no, you must have done something. No one JUST gets the best pet shirt!"
Callie really needed to know how Charlie got his Best Pet shirt. "I need you to think, Charlie. There has to be something you did."
Charlie thought long and hard when he suddenly got excited! "Hah! I know. When my dad comes home, I greet him at the door and make a lot of noise, so he knows I am happy to see him." "And how do you do that?" Callie asked quickly? "Well... I bark very loud," Charlie replied.
"I can't bark, but I think I know what to do. Thanks for your help Charlie," Callie said as she ran home.

A few minutes later Callie returned with a sad look on her face. "Whats wrong Charlie asked?" Callie took a deep breath and replied, "let's just say my mom's reaction was not what I thought it would be." Before Charlie could ask why, Callie spoke as she relived the moment.
"I did what you said, Charlie! I went home to make noise. I climbed on the table and waited for mom to come home. As soon as she opened the door, I dropped her vase. When it shattered on the floor, it made a lot of noise. It scared me! And it scared her too. When mom was done being scared, she yelled at me, and so I ran.
