“Special Protection".
It was built in 1905. It was the 1st Primary School of Katerini until 1979 when it was characterized as a work of art of "special protection" by decision of the Ministry of Culture. Inside it is host to the permanent exhibition of sculptures by the famous sculptor from Katacha, Pieria, Efthymios Kalevras.
It is in the centre of the city and now it’s a museum. This museum has exhibits and events. Many schools go there to see photos and learn about how the city was in the past.

Tsalopoulos mansion - “Nine Muses” Art Centre
1968 2019

This cultural centre was renamed
“Centre of Muses and Art: Nine Muses”.
Its former name being “Tsalopoulos Mansion”.
The choice of the new name was not accidental,
as the nine muses, according to Greek mythology,
were born in the Pieria Mountains.
The Muses were nine ancient deities,
daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne,
who loved music, dance and theatre.

The Priceless Ancient Treasures
of Dion, Macedonia.
Ancient Dion is located in the shadow
of mount Olympus next to the homonymous village of the state of Pieria. It was the pre-eminent holy city of the Macedonians and the sanctuary of Zeus. It reached great prosperity during Hellenistic times, but also in Roman times, as it was one of the earliest Roman colonies in the Macedonian area.

Treasures of the Archaeological
Museum of Dion.
Half a kilometer west of the archaeological park, in the modern village of Dion, is the Archaeological Museum, built in 1983. Here the finds of ancient Dion and other archaeological places are exhibited. The museum contains many items from when the Romans lived in the area, including statues, architectural members, votive and grave monuments, coins, and many other objects found in the necropolis and the sanctuaries and baths of the ancient city on site.

The Archive
Store Gallery
Βehind the museum there is a building which is called The Archaeotheke -The Archive -Store Gallery. It was erected specifically for the exhibition of the Dionysos mosaic but it is also a place of preservation and scientific study of the findings before they are stored or transferred to the museum. In this area visitors have the opportunity to see statues and mosaics as unearthed, cleared of excavation soil and many of which are usually inaccessible to warehouses

Βυζαντινό Κάστρο στον Πλαταμώνα
Κάτοψη Κάστρου Πλαταμώνα

Important discoveries confirm the suggestion
that on this position was the ancient Greek city Heraclia (Ηράκλειας - Ηράκλειον.)
and the gate in the wall of the donjon.
"First City of Macedonia Herakleion" writes Skylas in 360 BC.
By Thanasis Pitsilkas
The castle has passed under the occupation of the Franks, Greeks, Turks and Venetians in the passage of time, and in 1941 suffered bombardment by German troops.
By Sotiris Ofidis

Inside the castle walls the church of Agia Paraskevi is maintained (the only one of the 5 that existed there in the past which during the Turkish occupation was converted into a mosque.
By Sotiris Ofidis

Between the two gates of the main entrance there was an additional tower, now destroyed.
By Aristotelis Balitas
Main entrance

The spacious outer wall of the castle has a polygonal shape, reinforced by towers placed at irregular intervals and is in good condition.
Its entrance is located on the south-eastern side.
In the castle of Platamonas we find the 3 basic characteristics of medieval fortresses:
the first enclosure, the second enclosure which is also the acropolis and the central tower.
By Antonis Liakopoulos

The well-preserved octagonal tower, dominates from a height of 16 meters and it is an imposing medieval fortress.
By Thanasis Pitsilkas

Partially well-preserved cannons served in the later Middle Ages, the defense of pirates and the general defense of the fortress. By Aristotelis Balitas

Today, the Platamonas Castle, serves as one of the Olympus Festival venues.
In the open air, with good acoustics, theatrical performances and concerts take place here.

Magical View
But even if you have not heard anything about the history of the Castle of Platamona, you will surely have whispered the lyrics of Philip Grapsa:
S' anazito sti Saloniki
I Look For You In Salonica
After I was sown by an empress fate
An ancient Macedonian womb gave birth to me,
With an empty quiver I fight in the winter, From the castle to the heart of Platamona.
