Birds are animals that have feathers, 

wings, two legs, a beak, and they hatch 

from eggs. There are over 9,700 

different species of birds. And over 30 

different groups of birds. 

All birds have wings. But some cannot 

fly. Penguins and ostriches cannot fly 

because their wings are too small and 

their bodies are too heavy. 

How do birds fly? Birds fly by air going over and under their wings. The 

goes slow over the thick part of the wing and then moves much faster 

over the thin part of the wings. They also have large lungs, strong 

muscles, and hollow bones. 

Birds live in different habitats and 

eat different foods. Some birds eat 

worms, grass, and bugs. While other 

birds eat fish, shrimp, small animals, 

mice, snakes, rabbits, other bird's 

eggs, snails, and water plants. 

Mother birds lay their eggs in nests. Birds 

make nests of different sizes and from 

different materials. Such as spider webs, 

mud, twigs, branches, and grass. 

Where do birds live? Birds live all over the 

world. Birds live on every continent. Even 

Antarctica. Some species of birds are only 

found in certain areas. 

Baby birds hatch from eggs. Eggs are oval or 

round. When the baby bird that is inside of 

the egg is ready to come out it uses it's beak 

to break out of the egg. 

How do birds sit on 

trees? Birds use 

their toes to wrap 

around the branch to 

hang on. When birds 

sit on branches it is 

called perching. 

Perching means to sit 

or roost on things.
