 Pneumonia, popularly known as pneumonia; It is an infectious disease that affects the lung tissue and develops mostly due to bacteria, viruses and, more rarely, fungi.

Since 2009, the World Health Organization has been organizing awareness activities on November 12 to draw attention to the disease, to prevent it, to ensure that patients receive treatment regularly and to draw attention to vaccination.

As TÜSAD, we would like to draw attention to the following points while conducting studies to increase public awareness of pneumonia and to include prevention methods as well as treatment of the disease:

The most risky groups for pneumonia are children under 5 years old and adults over 65 years old. Pneumonia can be one of the most important causes of death in these age groups. Unfortunately, pneumonia ranks first in deaths due to infections in our country.

Increasing rate of elderly population in the world and increasing additional chronic diseases (heart diseases, stroke, chronic lung diseases, etc.) in the elderly cause susceptibility to infections by reducing resistance. Especially in people aged 65 and over, the frequency of pneumonia increases, and it can progress in more severe and even lethal pictures compared to young people.

On the other hand, pneumonia is a treatable and preventable infectious disease. Vaccination can be prevented by adequate and balanced nutrition and improving environmental hygiene conditions. It is important to use effective and sufficient antibiotic therapy after the disease develops.

Vaccination is the most important preventive measure against pneumonia in children and the elderly. Vaccination can reduce the incidence of pneumonia and mortality rates. For this reason, children and the elderly should be advised to have pneumonia vaccine (pneumococcal and flu vaccine) according to the routine vaccination program recommendations in our country.
