About gerbils

Gerbils are amazing little creatures who are very smart. They have powerful hind legs for jumping and digging. Every gerbil has its own unique personality. The scientific name for gerbils translates to clawed warrior, which is most certainly true! Um... as well as being cute, gerbils can sometimes be cheeky little rebels...and some can even be grouchy! Whatever the kind, gerbils are easy to love. Hooray for gerbils! 

Feeding your gerbil

Gerbils are easy to feed. You can buy rodent food at your local pet store. or you could make your own! You will need: oats, raisins, and chopped or dried carrots. Mix them together to make a delicious meal your gerbil is sure to love. Gerbils can also eat rice and corn, plus other fruits like apples, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Never give your gerbil salted sunflower seeds, and look at the food at your pet store to see if its harmful to gerbils. 

Cage cleaning

Gerbils do not get as messy as other animals. They need their cage cleaned once a week. Don't know how to clean it? Here are the steps:

Step 1, take the base off the cage and remove the wheel, food and water.

Step 2, put all the old stuffing in a garbage bag. 

Step 3, spray the base with a hose or pet cleaner.

Step 4, put in new stuffing, new food and new water. 

Step 5, attach the base to the top.

Step 6, wash wheel and put it back in cage. 

Chewing

Like most other rodents, gerbil teeth never stop growing. So gerbils need stuff to help wear them down. If they didn't, their teeth would grow

into their mouths, and they would die! It 

is very important to have things for your

gerbil to chew on. They like wood, its strong and 

lasts a long time. But you can also give your gerbil: paper, cardboard, and fabric. 

Do not let them chew your shirt. Although fabric is okay for gerbils, you might be surprised how fast they work...
