Hello. This book is about my
invention - potato chips,
I'm George Crum.

I chose this topic because I want to
learn how greasy potato chips are.

HypothesisI think the HEB Thins will be the
least greasy.

Procedure

1. I wrote down the serving
size for each type of potato chip.

2. Then I counted the
number of chips that will be
used to carry out my experiment.
I used 3 chips from each bag.
I placed the chips on a sheet of
graph paper.

Materials1.Lay's Potato Chips
2.HEB Thins
3.HEB Kettle Cooked
4.Wax paper
5.Rolling Pin
6.Graph Paper/Pencil

   3. I then wrote down
   the amount of chips I pulled out
   from each brand.

   4. I placed the wax paper over the
   3 potato chips and pressed down
   with the rolling pin. I used the
   same procedure with all 3.

5. I threw away the chips I used.

6. I counted the number of squares that
were translucent from the grease. I made
a check mark in each square that had a
grease mark. I only counted squares
that were 1/2 full or more.

   7. I recorded the number of
       squares with a check mark
       for each brand to find out the average
       grease/fat per chips tested.
       (refer to graph on page 10)

8. Lastly, I recorded the number of
grease squares counted for
all the brands on a chart and
created a graph.

The potato chips with the least
amount of grease per chips is the HEB
Kettle Cooked. My hypothesis was
wrong. I thought that because the
HEB Thin Potato Chips were cut
thinner they would have less grease.

Conclusion

I spoke with a Nutritionist from UISD
about serving potato chips at Centeno
Elementary School.
I learned that potato chips
make you gain weight because
of the salt. The salt makes you
retain water.

Elementary schools can serve potato
chips for lunch only if they're less than
400 grams of calories.
Some schools serve nachos. Why?,
you ask. It is because they have
whole grain which is something potato
chips don't have.

Perspective

Chips can be served at schools.
But the schools want to expose
students to fruits,vegetables, and
whole grains. In order to serve
potato chips, the first ingredient must be
whole grain. Chips would have to be
whole grain and have less
than 10% of fat for every 100 calories.
