High on the North Yorkshire moors is a hill. A harmless
looking hill with its enclosed fences and green
pastures. But this hill has a very different feel to it at
night, for beneath its peak is a dark cave where Snarff
the dragon lives.
Snarff is like any dragon - a ferocious, fire breathing,
meat eating monster. Snarff's head is as big as a car
which can gulp down a cow or a sheep with ease.
When Snarff stretches his wings he is as wide as a
house and he is as tall as a house too. Outside of
Snarff's cave are piles and piles of bones, mainly those
of cows and sheep but there are others types too.

Fortunately, Snarff sleeps during the day and only
comes out to feed at night. One night Harriet was
getting her pyjamas on in her bedroom when she heard
a whoosh as something flapped past her bedroom
window. "Mum, what was that?" she asked. "Don't
worry" said Mum "it was only a bird". Harriet looked into
the dark night towards the house over the road and
there on the garden she could see a dark lump with
piercing yellow eyes looking directly towards her.
Harriet closed the curtains quickly and ran and clung to
Mum's leg. "Calm down Harriet, there's no such thing as
dragons!" said Mum but even Mum had heard rumours
about Snarff the dragon but she didn't believe them.

The phone rang and it was Dad. "Will you pick me up
from the top moor road, my car has broken down?" he
said. "Come on Hattie" said Mum "we need to collect
Dad".

The car drove away from the safety of the village and up
the dark, lonely moor road. It was a wonderfully clear
evening and a full moon shone bright in the star filled
sky. Suddenly a shadow covered the car as if something
was above it. Harriet looked out of her window and saw
a huge dragon flying low overhead. Grasped within the
dragon's claws was a poor cow which struggled - kicking
and mooing in panic but there was nothing that could be
done for that poor creature.
The dragon soared high and flew towards the dark hill in
the distance. Harriet spluttered "dddragon!" and Mum
snapped "stop being silly Hattie, it's just a seagull or
something!"

Two bright lights shone on the road ahead and there was
Dad standing next to his car shaking like a leaf. Mum
stopped and he jumped into the car. "Did you see that!" Dad
shrieked. “No what?” said Mum. "A ddddrraaaggon" he
spluttered "get us out of here now!" Mum looked at Hattie’s
worried face and wondered if she might have been telling
the truth after all?
The car sped off but was quickly covered by the dark
shadow as the dragon's wings whooshed and flapped closely
above. Dad searched the sky looking for the dragon when
two bright yellow eyes peered in the side window as the
dragon turned his attention to the people in the car.
Suddenly the door windows smashed as the dragon's
powerful talons gripped the car and lifted it clear from the
road. "What are we going to do!" screamed Mum. All we can
do is pray he sees something more tasty along the way and
loses interest in us.
