Olivia is a first-grader at Herrera Elementary. She loves going to school because she spends time with her friends. She enjoys reading and working on math problems.

One morning before school, Olivia is in the kitchen with her mom eating pancakes. They are both watching the news when they hear of a virus called Covid-19.

Mom, what is Covid-19?

I am not sure, but it is probably nothing to worry about.

A few months go by, and all of Olivia's friends are talking about the new virus, Covid-19. 

Have you heard some places are having lockdowns? 

Yeah, I wonder if it will spread to other parts of the world.

I wonder if schools will close down.

I can do class from my bed!

Within the following weeks, Olivia and her mother find out that schools will no longer be in person. Olivia was upset because she enjoyed going to school, seeing her friends, and working on math problems. After some thinking, she thought the idea of having an online school might not be too bad.

Olivia enjoyed the first few weeks of online school. She did not have to wake up early or get dressed in her uniform because she went to school in her pajamas! 

Some time went by, and Olivia felt sad. She could not see her friends and missed having a routine; in which she felt in control of her life.

I am not the best at drawing, but I can try.

Olivia's mom told her that having a hobby can help distract us, and it is a valuable way to learn a new skill while stimulating our brains.

Maybe you can try painting or drawing.

After a few days of drawing everything around her, Olivia decided that her drawings looked weird and crooked, so she moved on to painting.
