Phillis Wheatley Peters was the first African-American author of a published book of poetry. Born in West Africa, she was sold into slavery at the age of seven or eight and transported to North America, where she was bought by the Wheatley family of Boston. After she learned to read and write, they encouraged her poetry when they saw her talent.

Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet and politician who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Neruda became known as a poet when he was 13 years old, and wrote in a variety of styles, including surrealist poems, historical epics, overtly political manifestos, a prose autobiography, and passionate love poems such as the ones in his collection Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair (1924).

Although he made his first poetry experiments with sketches in middle school and prosody in high school, his real poetry studies started during his university years. He used various pseudonyms throughout his artistic life, and as a result of a claim he made while using the name "Cemal Süreyya", which he gave himself as a child, he threw out one of the letters "y" in his name.
