Riya:- Dad, Our geography teacher told us, there is 71% of water on Earth. But she always say we should save water. If there is so much water on the earth then what is the need to save water?

Dad:- It is true that the earth surface in covered with 71% of water however only 0.5% of fresh water is potable.

Mother:- That is the sign for percentage. The word cent means hundred. We read 80% as ‘80 percent’.

Sania:- Then, what does percentage mean?

Mother:- It means that if the total marks are 100, then you have got 80 marks out of 100. 

Sania:- So that means if there is 100 units of water on earth only 0.5% is available for drinking!! That is so less, We should really save water Mumma!

PERCENTAGE

1) Percentage in the Form of a Fraction:

50% means 50 parts of a total of 100. So, 50 out of 100 or 50 100 = 1/2 part. In other words, 50% is half of the whole.

25% means 25 parts out of 100. And 25 100 = 1/4 part of the whole (or total).

35% means 35 parts out of 100. And 35/100 = 7/20 part of the whole.
