The Wild Turkey
Author: Jalenni Cruz & Illustrator: Internet and Kindergarten Class
Aa The turkey is a very popular and well known bird in America.

BbThe beard of the turkey is a cluster of long, hairlike feathers
that grow on the center of a male turkey's chest. The average
length is about 9 inches long.

CcCaruncles are fleshy bumps that grow over the head and
neck of the turkey. They tend to turn red when the turkey
becomes aggressive.

DdDusting is a way for turkeys to clean their feathers. The
turkey lies on dry sand and they kick dust and dirt onto their
backs.

EeThe ears of a turkey are small holes found just behind the
eyes.

FfAn adult turkey has between 5,000 and 6,000 feathers,
which include a color combination of green, red, bronze,
copper and gold.

GgGobblers are male wild turkeys. They are typically larger,
darker, shinier and more colorful than hens. Their heads are
especially colorful and can turn red, white and/or blue.

Hh Hens, or female wild turkeys, are smaller and duller
looking than the colorful gobbler. Hens also have more
feathers on their heads than gobblers do, which helps
hens blend into their surroundings.

IiWild turkeys spend their days looking for food on the ground.
They often eat insects, berries, seeds, nuts, flowers, grain
and small lizards and frogs.

JjJake refers to gobblers (male turkeys) that are less
than a year old and Jenny refers to hens (female
turkeys) that are less than a year old.

KkThe feathers are what keep the turkeys warm and dry,
allowing them to fly.

LlThe average length of life for wild turkeys is just under 2
years, but they have been known to live for more than 5 years
in the wild. The record is 17 years.

MmMale turkeys have brightly colored, nearly featherless
heads.
Illustrated by:Melany
NnHens nest on the ground, often in places where they
can hide among plants. They lay about 4-17 eggs
during a two-week period.

OoWild turkeys are omnivores.

PpPoult is known as a baby turkey until it is approximately six
months old.

QqWild turkeys go on a quest when looking for food to
eat.

RrWild Turkeys prefer open areas where they are able to
roost in trees at night time.
