"Many English words have greek root words like the word
telephone which means “far off” (tel) and “voice” (phone).
Punctuation, paragraphing, and punctuation comes from the greek
writing. Also, the Athenian Economy was based on trade to get the
goods and resources from cities around them. For sports, the first
Olympics were in 776 B.C.E to honor greek gods zeus. During the
olympics an athlete will light the olympic flame. Pentathlon is the
greek word for five contests it included footrace, discus throw, long
jump, javelin throw and wrestling. The greeks made this event to
test athletic skill." Jake says.
" WOW that was interesting, but let's go see what those two are
fighting about." says Tess.

"My type of government is better!" says
Austin.
"NO, this type is better!" says Leighton.
"AAAAARRRRRGGGGG!" they both say.

“In 2000-800 BCE-most cities ruled with a
monarchy or a king. All power is in the hands of
one person(there are no queens), which was
chosen by the people in the city. After leader dies,
another was chosen by people. The kings made
laws and acted as judges, conducted religious
ceremonies, and led army to war." Ron says.

"Also, this government used soldiers to punish law
disobeyers. The king had counsels called
Aristocrats(meaning “best”),the aristocrats were
wealthy landowning men, near the end of this type
of government the aristocrats overthrew the king
and by 800 BCE there were almost no kings left.”

"Another government that was used was the
Oligarchs! It all started in 800 BCE, most of the
Oligarchs were rich land owning men or wealthy
merchants. The Oligarchs had comfortable lives
while the poor worked in fields. Oligarchs ignored
most peoples requests and made bad laws, toward
the end of this government soldiers and people
overthrew oligarchy to create fairness.”

"There is even another one called Tyranny. This
one started shortly around 600 BCE. The Tyrants
cannot claim a legal right to rule and when they die
their son does not inherit their power. Tyrants took
control by force(they were usually military
leaders), they were fair to everybody, made good
changes/laws, and lastly Tyrant was Hippias in
Athens, so everybody disliked him so they switched
to new government.”

“Around 500 BCE, a new type of government called
direct Democracy(every citizen can vote on every
issue). They had an assembly or law making group
that any free man could vote in and free men also
ran cities day to day business. Many problems
occurred in voting(people persuading others) which
caused to change back to earlier forms of
government.”

That's very interesting, says tess "One last thing I forgot to tell you are about
the different social classes in Greece. Sparta
had the council members as the highest called
Aristocratic Sparties. Then came the middle
class called Perioeci who were farmers and
artisans they paid taxes and served in the
army, but had no political rights. The lowest
class was helots they were considered a slave
class. Lastly, with the women, they always had
to be ready to fight and had to guard the
men's property." Ron says.
they could speak to the mens friends

"The social class for Athens was that you can't
become a citizen till your 18 and it can only be
a man. Any citizen could attend the meetings
and they would discuss meeting and laws. Now
for the women they couldn't attend meetings,
vote, or own any property. Women would
basically stay home and take care of the kids."
Ron says.
"Wow that seems harsh for women." Tess
says.
