It was Monday and the school
day was finally over for first
grader Jimmy Carpleton, who
just couldn't wait to get home.
He had been working hard on
his spelling worksheets all day!

"Some after school
cartoons sounds pretty
great right now!" Jimmy
thought as he walked to
his bus.

On the ride home, Jimmy was
debating whether he wanted
to watch funny or scary
cartoons, when suddenly he
remembered: his room was a
mess!

His parents, Mr. Carpleton and Mrs. Carpleton,
made a rule that Jimmy couldn't go out and do
fun things until he cleaned his room.

By clean his parents meant he
couldn't just shove his toys and
clothes under his bed, he actually
had to put them in their place,
which was another rule Jimmy's
parents made. "How ridiculous!"
Jimmy said to himself.

But then, Jimmy remembered his mom and dad
wouldn't be home for awhile because they'd be at work.
Only his older brother Mikey, an eighth grader, would be
home to watch him. "I can watch T.V. until about five
minutes before Mom and Dad get home! Then I can
clean my room!" Jimmy said to himself, as he walked off
his bus at his stop.

When Jimmy opened his front door his
mom was sitting at the kitchen table.
"Oh, hi Mom! I thought you had to
work today" Jimmy said as he gave his
mom a big bear hug. "I did sweetie,
but I got to come home early today"
she said as she gave Jimmy a kiss on
the forehead.

"How was school?" she asked. "Kinda hard. Do you think
I could maybe watch some cartoons for a little bit?"
Jimmy asked. "Oh, I suppose. Just don't forget to clean
your room later!" she said.

Jimmy ran to the T.V. and turned on one of his favorite
cartoons.

About an hour later, the phone rang. Jimmy ran to
answer it.

"Hello?" Jimmy said as he answered the phone. "Hey,
it's Riley. Come over to my house to play!"

Riley is Jimmy's best friend since he was four, so Jimmy
was super excited to play with Riley. "Let me go ask my
mom!" Jimmy ran to his mom and asked if he could go
play with Riley.

"Have you cleaned your room yet?" she asked.
"Uh...yes" Jimmy said. "Let's go check" his mom said,
walking towards his room.

When Jimmy's mom saw
his room wasn't clean,
she was upset that he
lied to her and said
"Lying isn't okay Jimmy.
If you do it again your
dad and I will have to
ground you. Now, if you
clean your room I will let
you go play with Riley,
but only for thirty
minutes."

Jimmy didn't like that he made his
mom upset when he lied, but he
really wanted to play with Riley. "I
should clean my room as fast as I
can, so I can go to Riley's sooner"
Jimmy thought to himself.

Jimmy tried to clean his room the right way
and to put everything where it belonged,
but it was just taking too long! So, he
decided to shove and cram his clothes and
toys under his bed, throw them in his
closet, and cram them into his drawers!

Once Jimmy
thought his room
looked clean
enough, he showed
his mom and she
agreed to take him
to Riley's.

The next day when Jimmy had to clean his room again, he
remembered how easy and quick it was when he just crammed all
his things in places they didn't belong.
