Hello, I am Peter the puffer! It's so nice of
you to dive in and explore the ocean with me!
I am so excited to introduce you to my
friends
and to tell you a bit about where I live.

The ocean is ENORMOUS and full of amazing fish
and mammals just like myself. Come along, I will
introduce you to one now!

Meet Maury the Marine Mammal! Like other marine
mammals, Maury has adapted to life in the ocean.
More than 100 mammals depend on the ocean for
most or all of their life needs.

There are 128 different species of mammals that I live
with down here. I used to wonder why the mammals
and I were so different! Basically, like all mammals
both in the water and on land, they have distinct
characteristics.
All mammals breathe air through lungs, give birth to
live young, are warm blooded, and have hair or fur.

So although Maury and humans like yourself do not necessarily
look alike, I can tell you that you are both Mammals, just with
different appearances and survival strategies.
Check out this cool picture of some of the
o other marine mammals around here!

So let me explain this a bit more. Marine
mammals are divided into three orders:
Carnivora, Sirenia, and Cetacea.
The Carnivora group includes: sea lions, seals, walruses,
sea otter, and polar bear.
The Sirenia group includes: manatees and dugongs (or sea
cows).
The Cetacea group includes: whales, dolphins, and
porpoises.

Now, I would like to share some interesting facts with you about
my friends the marine mammals.
They have mammary glands that produce milk to feed their young.
They cannot breath under water, instead they have extra large lungs and
specially adapted muscles designed to store oxygen.
They have very think blubber or fat to help them maintain body heat.
Specially designed veins to help transfer blood to vital organs in cold
and deep waters.
Many of them have fins, flukes, or flippers for swimming.

So you see, while not all marine mammalsshare the same biological characteristics,
they all live near or in the ocean. They ALL
need the ocean for their supply of food and
water to survive.
