Nolan came home from work, put his keys on the
table, and hung his Animal Welfare Police jacket up in
the closet. As he walked further into the house, his dog
Lola rushed up from her bed to greet him along with his
9-year old son Rory.
Rory and Nolan walked into the family room to sit
down. Rory asked, “Dad, did you solve the case today?”
Nolan replied, “Yes, I did!” with a big smile on
his face. “I figured out who was killing all the foxes in
the wildlife preserve!”
“Wow, how did you do that?”
Nolan leaned back in the couch with a smile of
satisfaction on his face. “It’s too long to go into great
detail, but I ended up tracking the shell casings to a
custom gun maker in town who only makes guns for
three customers. It’s his hobby.”
“Rory,” Nolan asked suddenly, “how did you hurt
your leg?”
“What do you mean, how did I hurt my leg, dad?”

“Well, I noticed that you limped over to me and that
you’ve changed out of your favorite sweatpants that you
wore to school this morning, so I assumed you got some
blood on them or something.”
“Yeah, I hurt it playing kickball. I tripped and fell
rounding third base, but it’s fine now.”
“Alright, well let’s get dinner going. I think there’s
ham from last night.”
Nolan and Rory sat down to eat. After they finished,
Nolan told Rory to get ready for bed.
“Lola! Time to go outside!” called Nolan. No response
from Lola.
“Rory,” Nolan called. “Did you let Lola outside
already?”
“I let her outside right before dinner because she
was waiting by the door.”
Nolan and Rory went outside to bring Lola in. Rory
shouted her name many times but there was no reply.
Nolan shouted, “Lola!” Again, no reply.
“Rory said, “Dad, I don’t think Lola’s here.”

Nolan said, “That’s funny. She’d never wander off. Rory, you go
back inside, I’m going to look around some more.”
Nolan walked out by the street, looking for clues. As he
scanned, he noticed a bit of packaging. He picked it up and saw
it was the top of a package of Doggie Bacon Bites.
Nolan walked back inside.
Rory, I think Lola’s been stolen,” Nolan said.
“How could that happen? Can you figure out who took her?”
“No, not yet, but I’m sure I will figure it out tomorrow. We
both have to go to bed and get some sleep. Don’t worry, Rory,
I am sure we can find her tomorrow.”
The next day, Rory had to go to school and Nolan headed to
the dog park to see if anyone had seen Lola.
“Maya! How’s Bailey doing? I heard she ate a bunch of raw
chicken off of the counter.”
“She’s fine – see her running around over there? Where’s
Lola?"

“She’s not here. That’s actually why I came to the dog park.
She’s missing and I was wondering if anyone had seen her.
Maybe she wandered over here.”
“No, I haven’t seen her. I’m sure you’ll find her – she’s a
great dog so even if she wandered off, she’ll come back.”
“Maya, I hope it works out like that. In the meantime, have
you seen Connor? I really wanted to talk to him.”
“Nope, I haven’t.”
“That’s strange. He usually comes to the park with Rex now.
Maybe Rex is sick and he’s taking him to the vet.”
“Maybe. Good luck finding Lola!”
“Alright, I have to get back. Rory’s getting out of school
soon.”
Nolan walked in to the living room to see Rory sitting on the
couch, holding one of Lola’s dog toys.
Rory jumped up. “Did you find her?”
Nolan looked down at his shoes. “No, I didn’t.”
Rory walked back to the couch, still holding Lola’s toy and
sits down. He said sadly, “I miss Lola. She’s the best dog ever.”
