That's why fires always break out, Ms. Nevin! Again, the air conditioner is not turned off, the natural gas valve is also open. While saying these, sweat was dripping from Engin Bey's face. He had actually made it a habit to check every part of the house before leaving the house. This time it would be a long separation. They were very close to the sea vacation that they had promised for years and could not fulfill. He also made a nice birthday surprise for his wife. It was Nevin's birthday. Two days later.
---Burak, how old is your mother?
---Don't you know, dad, she's always 39 years old.
Ms. Nevin also joined the laughter of Engin Bey and his son Burak and they did not prolong it.
---Come on, hurry up! Don't go wrong again. Whenever we intend to go on vacation, we always experience a negativity. You're right, Engin Bey said.
---I'm carrying the suitcases to the car. Burak, bring the small bags and we'll put them in.
Although his work was very busy in the factory where he worked, he would use 10 days of his annual leave for this holiday. Mr. Engin was a good engineer who loved his job. Although he was in his fifties, his energy was always appreciated by his colleagues. Burak graduated from high school and wanted to be an engineer like his father. They put the suitcases they took down in the back of the car. They put the ones that didn't fit in the trunk in the back seat. That's too many suitcases for a short vacation, but Ms. Nevin has always made it a habit to pack whatever is necessary and unnecessary.
-People will think we are moving, dad, my mother has shown her ingenuity again.
---You don't get a temper until you die, my son
we're used to it, so Ms.Nevin can't hear it anymore.
When the father and son finished their preparations, Ms. Nevin came closer. They were now ready to go.

After a long journey that took eight hours, they arrived in Manavgat. When they left the main road at the entrance of the city and turned to the side where the holiday village is located, Burak took off the headphones he wore along the way and started to watch the surroundings. All three of them were very excited. Finally, they were going to their dream holiday and the holiday village. Engin Bey was tired and sweaty due to the effect of driving and the heat. He didn't like turning on the air conditioner while driving. Ms. Nevin admired his patience and his being well-organized ,and she had been in love with him since her university years. Although she offered to drive occasionally on the road, Mrs. Engin did not accept. When he was on the road, Engin Bey obeyed all the traffic rules and did not like to go fast.
Finally, the holiday village appeared. In this place, which was built on a very large area, the sea and the forest were intertwined. After passing the security at the entrance, they headed towards their accommodation. The holiday village consisted of a hotel-shaped main building and duplex houses. There were small gardens in front of the houses. Engin Bey especially wanted the house number 29 . Since Ms. Nevin was born on July 29, he would add this to the surprise. They kept looking for, checking the numbers in the areas where the houses were. When they found the house number 29, they were all
very happy. They forgot all their weariness. The house had a big balcony and it was facing the sea. This balcony was not too high from the ground. The forest area was starting at the back a little higher. This forest area, which was in the form of small hills, was covered with trees all over. The main entrance to the resort was quite wide and secure. It was surrounded by high walls. It also had a small gate that opened onto the beach. Right next to them, three people were sitting on the balcony of the house number 28.
They had apparently arrived and settled earlier. “Welcome,” said the man on the balcony. The woman smiled too. Mr. Engin and Ms. Nevin also responded with smiles. Burak was again wearing his headphones, admiring the sea and the holiday village. He was thinking about how he would explain this holiday to his friends on his return. The young girl on the balcony of the opposite house greeted Mrs. Engin and Mrs. Nevin and Burak as well. But Burak did not notice. His mother touched his shoulder and he turned and saw the girl. He responded by waving his hand.

Their neighbor Mr. Murat was a manager in a company. He was tall, broad-shouldered and large-bodied. His wife, Esra, was a nurse. Contrary to Murat Bey, she was a short and slightly overweight brunette woman. Like Burak their daughter Burcu had graduated from high school this year. The result of the exam would be announced in a week or two, and maybe she would go to medical school. She has been dreaming about being a doctor since childhood. Burcu was a tall, beautiful young girl with blue eyes.
Ms.Nevin was the first person to go out to the balcony
after putting the things away and resting for a while. The sun was about to set. Normally, the weather was a little cooler at this time, but this evening was different. It was as if there was a smell of smoke around. While watching the surroundings, Nevin was trying to make sense of the smell of smoke. She looked at the sea for a while and watched the sunset over the sea. Here they were on the vacation they had been missing for years.
We should enjoy it, we all deserve it so much, she thought.
They had worked themselves constantly while their son struggled with school and tutoring throughout the year. Ms. Nevin was pulled out of her thoughts by the smell of smoke that burned her throat. The smell of smoke in the air increased even more than a little while ago. In the fields in the villages, it was sometimes burned to clean the weeds and remnants after the crop, but not in this season. Was it someone's house on fire or a farm?
Mr. Engin , who went to the balcony, also felt the smell of smoke. He looked at his wife.
--- Is there a fire somewhere, Nevin? What is that smoke smell?
---I don't know, it was there a while ago, but it seems to be increasing.
--- Maybe they are burning fields
---Maybe …

The holiday village they were in was covered with red pine forests, albeit sparse, and maquis trees that remained green in summer and winter. The smell of smoke spreading gradually bothered Mr. Engin in particular. In addition, Marmaris forest fire, which occupied the agenda of the country for a few days, was also a plus. Nevertheless, Ms. Nevin made a comment, hoping that such a disaster would not happen on this holiday they came as a family;
--- Same scenario every year; they are burning stubble.
Mr. Engin; he called out as if he wanted to start his vacation by asking his wife for a coffee of tiredness;
---Let's drink our black coffee on the balcony.
Realizing the situation, Murat Bey joined the balcony conversation. Reminding that Engin Bey is road tired;
--- Rest today, let your tiredness go away, let's have dinner together tomorrow.
Mr. Engin expressed his satisfaction with this offer,
---Of course
He replied. A little while later, our happy couple was trying to make sense of the deep voices in their area while they were sipping their tired coffee.
There was an uneasiness in the air that did not match the name of the resort. Before long, a distant siren sounded; accompanied this effort. There was an oddity they had just never thought possible; I wonder if the news of the fire that shook the country for a few days also took place in the village where they were located?

Engin Bey bent down holding onto the balcony rails in hopes of seeing what was going on, but all he could see was the lights of the neighboring houses. Murat Bey, who was watching from the balcony with the same thought for a while, came face to face. Without speaking to the two men, she had almost cooperated with her gaze and decided to go downstairs together. Increasing frequency of siren sounds played an important role in shaping this common decision. A few minutes later, they both met on the same street. He had intended to walk together to the end of the street and discover what it was that they had just not seen from the balcony.
Engin Bey broke the silence that accompanied their walk;
---We thought they were burning stubble, but I hope we were not mistaken.
Murat Bey says amen to this prayer;
---It happens a lot at this time of the year, you're probably right.
When the uphill climb was over, they were both shocked by what they saw. They realized that the ridge just a few kilometers away was in flames, stretching out to sea, creating a magnificent cove. The red of the sun, which was just beginning to set, had faded, and instead, the ruthless flames that were trying to swallow the red pine trees were illuminating the evening. In the light of the flames,
the smoke drifting into the sky was drawing gigantic shapes, almost like a shadow play.
Engin Bey biting his lips;
---I wish you had stubble, he called.
They had never thought that what they had just decided without speaking would bring this scene before them. Moreover, they were now sure that the siren sounds from their height belonged to the fire trucks trying to catch up with the fire.

They hesitated for a moment, wondering whether to go back home or go to the fire area. Meanwhile, Murat Bey's offer came;
---Let's go home and inform our spouses and children. Then, if necessary, we'll take a look.
They went downhill quickly. Both told the people at home what they had seen. Within a few minutes, both families had met again on the balconies. Both Nevin and Esra were asking their wives if it was arson or something, but neither Engin Bey nor Murat Bey had the slightest idea about the cause of the fire.
