Title: A Zoo For A Day
Author & Illustrator: Hannah Snelbaker
Standard: Mathematics 3rd Grade: CC.2.4.3.A.3
The mathematical dilemma in this story involves the earning, saving, and counting of coins in order to purchase something. This book works best if used with plastic coin manipulatives to match the coins shown on the page. This would be a great way to teach students how to learn conversion and currency in a fun, light, engaging way!

It was a HOT summer day! All Timmy could think about was a nice, cold cone of ice cream, but the ice cream cost $1.00. Timmy had to think of a way to earn the money so he get that delicious scoop of chocolate.

$1.00

As Timmy started to walk, he noticed a man playing with his dog outside. "Maybe if I offer to walk his dog, he will give me some money" Timmy thought.

Hi Sir! My name is Timmy. Could I walk your dog for $0.20?
Thanks for asking! I'm sure Bandit would love that! Here's two dimes!

Timmy put the $0.20 in his pocket and began to walk Bandit. As he walked, he ran into a woman watching her cow graze in the field.

Hello ma'am. My name is Timmy! For $0.20 I could walk your cow for you!

Milky White could REALLY use a good walk! Here's 4 nickels!

Timmy shoved the nickels in his pocket and began walking Milky White and Bandit! Suddenly, Bandit saw a squirrel and ran to chase it! Timmy tied Milky White to a tree and started running after Bandit!

BANDIT! GET BACK HERE!
Finally, Timmy caught Bandit and kept walking. Along the way, Timmy spotted a man washing his pet giraffe. "Maybe he will pay me to walk his giraffe" thought Timmy.

Hello sir! Could I walk your giraffe for you for $0.20?
Of course! I'm sure Marty would love to nibble on some trees! Here's one dime and 2 nickels.

Timmy placed the coins in his pocket and started walking with Bandit, Milky White, and Marty! As he walked he ran into another neighbor playing with her monkey.

Hello Miss. I would love to walk your monkey for $0.20.
George would LOVE a great swing through the trees! Here's 10 pennies and a dime!
