In Cúcuta, North of Santander; the legend of the Weeping Woman is well-known and passed down from generation to generation. According to the oral tradition it is a soul in Purgatory of a woman who drowned her children and looks for them by emmiting heartbreaking groans along the streets, canals, and rivers.
There are multiple stories that narrate the Weeping woman’s origin, However these stories have something especially in commun: A white figure appears near the water wailing for her children and that her wails are thunderous. This one, it's one of the most merciless and hare-brained of them.
A ravishing and stunning woman of indigenous origin fell hopelessly in love with a wealthy nobleman. For a time, everything seemed to be perfect for this couple, they backed each other and they had three children. As usual, over the years the man lost interest in her.

Maria’s heart fell apart since things did not go exactly her way, in a fit of rage she flew off the handle and decided to fling her children into the deep river and drowned them.
Once she recovered her mind and her wrath subsided, she noticed what she did to her children, she was at her wit’s end since they were dead and there was nothing she could do. Afterward, she committed suicide casting her into the river due to she didn’t resist such as profound sorrow.
From that moment, the weeping woman became a wandering soul who walked over the rivers in search of her lost children, mourning and crying out her loss, hence the name.
The Weeping Woman attracts children who misbehave with their parents, her purpose is to take them to the river as an offering or sacrifice to obtain forgiveness.
In the same way, the weeping woman appears to men to seduce them with her splendid beauty to get revenge on the one who betrayed/cheated on her.
