Prologue
A human walked up to his cage. Hunter weakly wagged his tail, with no hope he would get adopted.
"This one, mom!" The human called over another one.
"There are better dogs than that here. Why don't you choose this one?" He watched her point to another cage, with a puppy named Fred inside.
"But mom, I told you I wanted a golden retriever! There's a cute little puppy golden retriever right here." She looked into his eyes. Hunter looked straight back. His tail suddenly wagged even more. He put his paws against the cage and tried to lick her nose.
"You want that one?" A tall man asked. "Yes! I mean, mom, is it okay if I get this puppy?" The girl asked the other human. "Well, fine. But he's
your responsibility, got it?" The girl nodded in understanding.
The tall man walked over to my cage and opened the door. The girl picked him up and held him close. This was it! He was getting adopted. He looked at all the other dogs in the cages, all looking at him with sad, sad, eyes.
He turned my head and licked the girl's face.
"I hope you like him, Jennie." The other human told her while pulling out something rectangular from her purse.
"I do mom." The girl smiled. Why do you keep calling her "mom"? He wondered. Is that her name?
The humans opened the door and walked out. They went over to the lady at a desk, and brought out a crate. They put me inside and closed the door of the crate. I whined, not wanting to be in there. They set down
the crate on the hard floor, and went back to talking with the lady at the desk. They started writing things, that he couldn't understand, down. After a minute or two, they picked up the crate he was in, and left out the door. They got in a car, and drove away.
"Okay, Jennie, he's your responsibility, so when we get home I wanna see you taking him out, feeding him, giving him water, training him, not letting him rip stuff up, and keeping him away from my stuff, okay?" The older human said. "Okay yep mom." She replied.
Hmm, Jennie and Mom, okay... I thought before drifting off to sleep.
Chapter one
I barked even louder. No reply. Why don't they hear me? I barked again. I wagged my tail as I heard my humans feet approach. I barked happily as they looked at me.
"Morning Hunter..." Jennie sighed. She opened my crate and put on my leash. A morning walk already? I thought. Usually we walk after I ate my morning food. We began heading toward the door. I wanna eat my food! I grunted yanking on the leash. Jennie continued to pull forward. Suddenly I yelped. That hurt!
"You pulled! I didn't. It's not my fault!" Jennie seemed to scream at me. I whined. I don't like being a bad boy, I just like eating. I like the part when the food drops into your stomach.
"Come on." I hear Jennie say. I bark twice, then swipe a glance at my
bowl. I want food! Why don't you get that? He looked up into her eyes.
"Hunter, what's the matter? I'm taking you out! Since when have you been so scared of going outside?" She said, looking down at him.
Hunter tugged lightly towards my bowl. She doesn't know that I want food. He thought. He whined. He pulled and pulled until he could touch my bowl. Hunter grabbed it with his teeth and pulled it back to Jennie. I whined again. Get the message... He thought.
"You want food!" She slapped her face. "We never walk before you eating your food. I'm sorry, I forgot." She bent down and hugged him tight.
"Well let's get you your food."
He panted, happy she started to take me out. Jennie picked up his bowl and headed towards the food bag. He wagged his tail and followed her.
Hunter licked his nose and watched her as she scooped food into my bowl. She set it down carefully. Instantly, he ran over and began to eat.
"There you go, boy." She crouched down and pat my head before walking away.
After a lot of famished gulps, he raced down the hall to where Jennie had vanished. He looked around and saw Jennie sitting on the couch and looking at something black and rectangular. There was a light emitting from it. Hunter growled and then barked once. Almost instantly, Jennie looked up.
"Oh it's you. Hi Hunter!" She said and picked him up off of the ground.
