Written By Arielle Murray
Illustrated By Arielle Murray

A a - Animals
Whales are animals that live in the sea.
There are 78 known species worldwide.

B b- Blowholes
All whales have blowholes that help them
breath air. Some whales can hold their breath
for over an hour before coming to the surface.

C c- Cetaceans
Whales are scientifically known as a part of
the cetacean species. They have smooth bodies
that help them swim very fast.

D d- Dorsal Fin
The dorsal fin IS always in an upright position
located on the top of the whale. Its purpose is to
help the whale swim more effectively.

E e- Echolocation
Some whales use this hunting strategy to find food. A group
of clicking sounds is sent out and the whales listen if those
sounds bounce off objects in order to find food.

F f- Flippers
Flippers are the located on both sides of the
whale. They are used to help the whale when
swimming

G g- Ghost Shrimp
The ghost shrimp is the primary diet of gray
whales. They are very small compared to the
whale so they have to eat a lot shrimp every day.

H h- Habitat
The habitat of whales constantly changes. All whales
have certain temperatures that they thrive in, when
that temperature changes too much they migrate in
order to find a new home.

I i- International Whaling Commission
The International Whaling Commission protect all
types of whales. They decrease the number of
people that hunt whales commercially.

.
J j- J Pod
J-Pod is a specific group of whales that marine
biologists studied. They kept track of their swimming
patterns and interaction with other whales.

K k- Krill
This small swimming creature is a major part of a
whale’s diet. It is estimated that the humpback
whales consumes several thousand pounds of krill
per month.

L l- Lunge Netting
Lunge netting is a type of feeding method used my
humpback whales. The whale will lunge into a school
of prey which caused the prey to be captured in
small bubbles.

M m- Mysticeti (baleen whales)
Baleen whales have a comb-like “teeth” that filters
what they eat. They usually use a hunting
technique called bottom feeding.

N n- Niche
A niche is the purpose of creatures in the animal
kingdom. All whales have a niche, but they are all
different and have a different purpose in the sea.

O o- Odontoceti (toothed whales)
Toothed whales, such as the orca, eat a variety of
foods. Their diet includes fish, octopus, and even
seabirds.

P p- Pods
Some whales swim in groups called pods while
contain family like bonds. They hardly separate and
work together to find food.
